Based on the play of the same name a decade earlier, this movie is all about the hippie, counter-culture generation of the late 1960s, fighting establishment and Vietnam. I can only guess it got made thanks in large part to the success of Grease. It's not as good as Grease but it's not a bad film. Some catchy music but it is an uneven film in tone and style. I was shocked when I saw Treat Williams as the lead and even more shocked to see how good he is. Until about 10 minutes left in this film, I would have given it a 6/10 but those final ten minutes are really outstanding and where the film finally, to me, hits its stride, with great lyrics, music, imagery and story coming together to create a memorable finale. 7/10

One of the few Musicals I like. Far better than the Oscar winning Chicago or Oliver. It might be that it came a decade to late, but the music is good, the source material brilliant, and I like the changes.

I remember many critics at the time thought that it came 10 years too late, and that some music had been re-arranged to sound too modern, with that said it worked well enough for me to give it 7/10.

Don't like musicals, don't like hippies. But I liked this. 7/10.
