My guess is that people really are starting to see how bad these movies actually are. Each one has gotten progressively worse. Michael Bay is talented at action and FX and big scale filmmaking, there's no denying that. But he's not so good at the things that really count in holding an audiences attention - Story and character and pacing.
He'll continue to have a great career, there's an audience for him (an clearly its large), but increasingly as time goes on people will get hip to what he has to offer, which in the final analysis isn't much. Michael Bay movies are like getting a present which is wrapped up in beautiful, colorful wrapping paper with gold leaf and ribbons, it even has sounds effects and pops confetti. You're blown away! Then you open it... and there's nothing inside. Its empty.
Or to put it more simply his movies are a meal with tons of calories and no nutrition. I like my meals a little more fully well rounded.

I hate this phrase but it's quite possibly audience fatigue.

You can only take a movie series based on children's toys so far, apparently.

first analogy (gift) applies to directors like JJ Abrams with their mystery boxes and rehashing nostalia of classic franchises. But not to Bay: you know exactly what you get from him and it may be gross and tasteless action porn but its not empty.
Second analogy (calories) is Bay incarnate.

I think people are tired of the 'Transformers' franchise and want something new. I am surprised it has lasted this long 'cause from what I have heard the last two movies were far from being great. I only saw the first movie and wasn't particularly interested in seeing the rest.

Yes, I think you understand my point. Its like eating a bowl of ice cream instead of a fully well rounded meal with nutritious food from all four food groups. How's that for more analogies!? lol

Well, the story is terrible and the acting is terrible. And its the 5th movie of a series that pretty much sucked from the beginning. That probably doesnt help.

Because this has been a terrible summer for movies. It probably doesn't have too much to do with Transformers itself.
Pirates 5 made significantly less than the past three movies.
War of the Planet of the Apes has so far made only about half the last one.
Cars 3 is over $200 million down from Cars 2.
Alien Covenant did a little over half of Prometheus.

Wonder Woman doing so well in June might have hurt a few of the movies that opened just after it. Also the glut of major releases in late June and July (Transformers/Apes/Spider-Man/Cars/Despicable Me) came too close together for any one film to gain much staying power.
