As always I enjoyed Amy Adams acting. She is wonderful. But as far as the story itself goes, I'm having trouble deciding how I feel about it. I didn't read the source material, although I usually don't because there are so often deviations from the source material as to make the exercise frustrating. Any thoughts from others who have seen it?
Edited to add: I did think that some of the dialogue was dumb. The question as to if they knew what a question was, was incredibly stupid. Any being that is capable of learning and manipulating matter to create vehicles, tools, etc., would have to acquire knowledge to do so. Sharing that knowledge would require the basic linguistic ability to ask for it. Even a dog or cat learns to ask for things; belly rubs, treats, walks, etc.

i am kinda liking certain elements, the ships were cool, the aliens were cool as well. what i am tired of is time-loops in films used as an excuse to write the film in reverse, without an interesting take or ending. great execution, poor resolution, just imho.

When she said that they don't perceive time as linear, I took that as a nod to the flashbacks actually being how she (and we) was learning to perceive time as well. I will say that when I saw the aliens the first time all I could think of was Kang and Kodos from the Simpsons.

It's a two-party system. You have to vote for one of us. "

I had mixed feelings on the film. It was kind of boring but at the same very intriguing. The concept of time being nonexistent was quite interesting. But, it was kind of confusing, and overall it felt like something was lacking from the film. I can't put a finger on it. I've only seen it once but I feel like this film requires a second viewing in order to fully "get it". And I did NOT like the look of the aliens at all. We're expected to believe that squid-like things were able to construct spaceships that could transport them to other planets?

Arrival is my favourite movie of the last couple of years, heck, even decade. For me, there was only one weak element in it, the way she managed to resolve the threat of war. Not even necessarily how it was done, even if it was cliché as heck (Bill and Tedd did it better!), but more the fake tension created. This movie barely had action in it, or at least, not the simple action scénes of people fighting or blowing things up. It just didn't need it. Not that easy to find a movie like that anymore, definitely not in the SF genre.

I saw it as Interstellar with a stronger emotional core. With Interstellar the core is meant to be the father daughter relationship, in Arrival mother daughter, however in Interstellar that core gets lost in the science it wants to put on screen, time dilation, wormholes, the 4th dimension or was it 5th? crop blights. Arrival it was about deciphering an alien language which then touched on how a 4th (or 5th)dimensional being perceives time, like the Tralfamadorians, but the core was the daughter keeping it centered.
