GOING IN STYLE 1979 6/10 Co-Writer/Director Martin Brest obviously didn't know how to handle GOING IN STYLE 1979's premise (3 old men named JOE, AL & WILLIE plan to rob a bank), because the story direction changed every 20 minutes or so. GOING IN STYLE 2017's plot is more focused but, just like its predecessor, it's not that funny. Having lost his auteur status (which is a shame since he has talent), Zach Braff's directing is competent but styless. While the 3 protagonists have chemistry, they don't form a very memorable comedy trio because their personalities and humour style are too similar. There's no contrast. Alan Arkin's performance is very good, Michael Caine's is decent and Morgan Freeman's is weak. As the years go by, it gets harder and harder to tell if Christopher Lloyd plays parodies of DOC BROWN or if he has run out of talent. Kenan Thompson has a funny cameo but, considering the jokes he makes and considering who the director is, it would've made more sense for Donald Faison to play that character. The robbery during the opening scene is so ridiculous that I was waiting for the revelation that JOE's anger towards the bank was making him imagine everything (especially because of what one of the robbers says to him and because of what happens to the bank employee). 6/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog (in English, in Spanish or in Italian).
