What do you guys think of this movie? I watched it last night and I really enjoyed it. The city and its crazy inhabitants are well thought-out and make for exciting action.
Any movie with both Lee Van Cleef and Kurt Russell is pretty much automatically good.
I do think that the first half was a little awkwardly edited and kind of slow, but I loved the second half. I wish they would just make good, solid action movies like this nowadays. It's not flashy, but it entertains and intrigues with some great characters along the way.
8/10 for me.

Great action, great parody, too. Wasn't this also the film that finally made everyone shut up and stop making fun of Kurt Russell for being a former Disney star?

The movie starts off well (like most Carpenter movies) but gets increasingly less interesting and creative as it goes along. Kurt Russell is awesome in it though.
6/10

I remember that as a kid I loved that movie. I loved Kurt Russells bad ass performance. I loved the high concept idea that NYC (which I lived in then) was turned into a post apocalyptic penal colony. And for nostalgic reasons I still enjoy it.
But the idea is FAR TOO outlandish to ever be taken seriously on any real level. Do you realize how many billions, maybe even trillions, of dollars the world economy would suffer if something that drastic happened to New York City? The US government would never allow it.
A remake (and don't doubt that someone will try one day) will have too much suspension of disbelief to overcome.

One of my favorites from Carpenter, just has a "cool" vibe throughout...probably due in large part to the cast.

the third installment (well, second, but Carpenter couldn't get funding without making L.A. to prove demand) was meant to be Escape from Earth.

"Oh no he didn't!" LOL

The fact that it could never happen makes no difference. Watching Escape From New York and Escape from L.A. give me the impression that Carpenter doesn't look very favorably on either city of the U.S. government. He really gives a huge middle finger to Los Angeles specifically. He blasts Hollywood and the social elite pretty hard with that movie.

Saw it in a theater in my hometown when it came out and have loved it ever since. I love when Donald Pleasence goes nuts at the end.

I always liked it. Not as much as some other Carpenter films but definitely in the top half. A million times better than its sequel.

6/10. Some of the action isn't shot well and a few technical details are dated. But the overall premise, the characters, and the anti-establishment vibe is entertaining.

Love it...Part of a great run of theatrical releases for Carpenter: Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing...(Christine broke the string...)

Loved it back in the day.
Haven't seen it in years.
Large chunks of it were filmed here in St. Louis.
True story, people were calling 911 when they saw the plane crash set!
