A remake is happening, not surprising at all because of the endless remakes in society today, Robert Rodriguez is directing and the script will be written by Neil Cross (the creator of Luther), and Christoph Waltz and Rosa Salazar will star in it.
This was probably announced April-ish since I found out about it in Empire Magazine's June 2017 issue

Loved it back in the day. Haven't seen it in years. Large chunks of it were filmed here in St. Louis. True story, people were calling 911 when they saw the plane crash set! I was able to drive down and catch a glimpse of some filming back when they were here, it was really cool and the part of town (along 6th Street where the abandoned St. Louis Center sits now, near the Dome), really did look blasted out enough to have been the remnants of a city in a post-apocalyptic world.

That's awesome! Do you still live here? I am in St. Louis City. It's fun to spot in the film: Theater = Fox Theater on Grand ( since remodeled and reopened ) Wrestling match = Union Station on Market ( since remodeled and reopened ) Bridge = Chain of Rocks Bridge ( since reopened as a pedestrian bridge / hiking trail ) I remember the newspaper saying they filmed the plane crash here in part because they could not find an empty lot in NYC!

It is so much fun to see local places on film.
All of White Palace (1990) and most of Up in the Air (2009) were also filmed here.

Yeah I've lived here all my life. I'm in St. Charles.

An 80's John Carpenter film starring Kurt Russell...of course it's brilliant.
Considering the amount of post-apocalyptic films that followed it, along with Mad Max 2, it must rank as one of the most influential films of the 80s. Actually, I think the home video market can thank Carpenter for the genres it kicked off with this and Halloween. Over the following years it seemed the shelves were packed full of slashers and post apocalyptic tapes.

I remember that as a kid I loved that movie. I loved Kurt Russells bad ass performance. I loved the high concept idea that NYC (which I lived in then) was turned into a post apocalyptic penal colony. And for nostalgic reasons I still enjoy it.
But the idea is FAR TOO outlandish to ever be taken seriously on any real level. Do you realize how many billions, maybe even trillions, of dollars the world economy would suffer if something that drastic happened to New York City? The US government would never allow it.
A remake (and don't doubt that someone will try one day) will have too much suspension of disbelief to overcome. Robert Rodriguez is already in the talks to do a remake.

The gang leader Trash always walked and stood with his back bent at odd angles. My friends and I kept making jokes about scoliosis. What a great movie.

It has a great start but I find the ending kind of a meh. Carpenter was serving the NWO agenda in subtle ways--the message at the end is--let chaos reign--down with society, whitey rule is corrupt (the Fog has the same message--the white town is built upon corruption-stealing gold from lepers--a communist demoralization message as Yuri Bezmenov said).
How does one reconcile a remake with the times we live in where Baltimore is turning into the same kind of city without any help from so-called fascists (I assume the president in EFNY is meant to be a sort of fascist character as opposed to a liberal)?
The movies are not with the times.
A remake should be about a US city taken over by muslim fanatics or something that is actually related to the issues of today. I trust it will be a dumbed down false SJW story that blames all problems on conservative white people and portrays other races as saints.

Don't be surprised if he gets Danny Trejo as Snake. Knowing Rodriguez he might, however Rodriguez has made a good movie or two and in those has cast appropriately, so if this really happens I think its just as likely that he casts someone we'll like better for it. Trejo's ok but he's too old and not quite right for Plisken. Maybe when he was younger.
hmmm, who would make a good modern Plisken?
I wouldn't mind it if they just cast Kurt Russell himself again! He was great in both Fast and Furious and Guardians of the Galaxy. If we're gonna go with an old guy might as well go with the original.
We could call it "Escape from New York Again" or "Escape from New York Too" lol

Enjoyable (if rather old-fashioned and undecided non-flashy) action movie. Russell is superb. In short, like it a lot.

I can see Russell pull it off again Over the years I've seen Gerard Butler linked with the role of Snake in a remake...not sure about that one. Also Jason Statham. I can understand why he was mentioned, and I love the guy, It could work. Couple I think might pull it off....Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Norman Reedus, Idris Elba, Karl Urban
