Approaching its 40th anniversary. Seems to me like one of the less-celebrated Spielberg titles, while still massively popular among film fans. When was the last time you saw it?

I never made it through it, even the story-integral Williams music and themes are insipid IMO.

Saw it on the BIG screen when it opened and loved it even tho' I don't usually like films like this. Have watched and re-watched it. Camped at Devil's Tower and watched it on their screen in the little amphitheater with the TOWER as backdrop. AMAZIN' experience.
I feel sorry for the guy above who didn't bother to watch it to the end. It's just sad to have missed such a good movie.

It is in a limited theatrical release for its 40th. I am going to see it this morning. I have searched all over but can't find out what version of the film I am going to see - Original Theatrical, Expanded, or Director's Cut. (BTW, in my reading I found one critic who claimed that the 1998 video release was the first ever use of the phrase "Director's Cut.")

Saw it in the movie theater as a kid and loved it. Since then I've seen it on TV here and there over the years.

NO REMAKES . UGH ! I remember those days of the late 1960s, "don't play with your food" and when the food wasn't good at all "an African kid would have loved eating this meal", offcourse they didn't use the word African, I was just cleaning it up, they used more horrible words back then.

Good film. Rewatched it recently and bought it on bluray. Impulse buy. Might never watch it again.

Am home from a XD screening at the local 'plex. What My Lovely Wife and I saw was the 1998 Director's Cut version. It contains the scene of the discovery of the cargo ship on the desert (not in the theatrical) and the original ending that does NOT have the scene of Neary inside the mothership (as in the Special Edition).
What a great masterpiece! So many great set-pieces (many, such as Roy and Gillian seeing Devil's Tower on the TV and the arrival of the mothership) raise goose bumps, fine acting, wonderful musical score (John Williams triumphing again right after Star Wars), and individual shot set-ups that could be framed and hung in an art gallery. I think this is Spielberg's greatest.

Close Encounters is one of my all-time favorites. I still watch it at least once or twice a year. The final encounter with the tall alien used to creep me out as a kid, and it still kinda does.

Some of the others cut vital scenes and add mediocre scenes in their place.
