The western 'No Name On The Bullet' stars Audie Murphy as notorious gun-for-hire John Gant whose arrival in Lordsburg, Arizona prompts some wild reactions. Local physician Luke Canfield (Charles Drake) becomes Gant's chess partner and unlikely ally, being the one person in town who doesn't seem aware of the gunfighter's reputation, but their brotherhood is tested when the poker players of Lordsburg start revealing their cards underneath the table.
Susan Cabot & Audie Murphy, stars of 'Duel At Silver Creek' (1952) & 'Gunsmoke' (1953), relax while filming 'Ride Clear Of Diablo' (1954) :
Jack Arnold's thoughtful western 'No Name On The Bullet' offers viewers a chance to witness Audie Murphy playing a ruthless cold-blooded assassin whose only concern is getting paid. He's surrounded by top flight players with R.G. Armstrong flexing his muscles as friendly blacksmith Asa Canfield, Edgar Stehli mounting sermons as town justice Judge Benson, Joan Evans baking cookies as Luke's fiance Anne Benson, Willis Bouchey counting chickens as lawmaker Sheriff Buck Hastings and Russ Bender keeping close watch as The Storekeeper. The card sharks are portrayed by John Alderson, Warren Stevens, Virginia Grey, Simon Scott, Karl Swenson and Whit Bissell.

If you're looking for a good western, I think this is a good one. Give it a try!

Given the chance Audie Murphy wasn't a bad actor, he just seldom had any chance to prove it... 1958 earlier version of The Quiet American by Graham Greene, directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, so it was a big production. We talked pets earlier today

The film's name was also used as the rather appropriate title of his biography.

No Name On The Bullet is a very good movie. If not for the western setting, it would fit comfortably into the Noir universe. With the focus on how a town reacts to a perceived threat, it's a nice companion piece to High Noon.
