Ann Doran, familiar face in hundreds of film and TV appearances spanning over 50 years: A reliable Frank Capra favorite ( Mr. Deeds Goes To Town, You Can't Take It With You, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, Meet John Doe), she played wholesome, small-town girls, big-city backstabbers, no-nonsense rustics and gossipy urbanites, sweet wives and mothers or wives-and-mothers-from-hell, secretaries, nurses, doctors and scientists, and could make them clueless or savvy and ingratiating or infuriating. Here she is getting her glam on early in her career: The mid-'50s were good for her, with prominent roles in The High and the Mighty as an hysterical passenger (and delivering some comic relief in a flashback)... ...and even more memorably, as James Dean's shrewish mother in Rebel Without A Cause:
Just recently saw her in a 1970 episode of Ironside as the flinty owner of a wholesale produce business who faces off with mob operatives trying to muscle in, and she was back not many episodes later as a helpful neighbor who's witnessed a kidnapping but doesn't realize it (two of her six appearances on the show; it was easy to guess the players Raymond Burr liked working with. Doran, like many others, made multiple appearances on both that show and Perry Mason). I remember encountering her in the parking lot of a Century City shopping center in the late '70s, and had to voice my appreciation of her work. I never approached big-name players - of whom you could see many in L.A. if you kept your eyes open - but ubiquitous character performers like Doran always seemed so grateful for not only the recognition of their faces, but for the knowledge of their names and credits, and were invariably gracious.

Doghouse6Nice write up on Ann Doran. I confess I didn't recognize her until the Rebel image. How great that you got to meet her and spoke to her. Must be fun living in LA and seeing famous folk.

....bat...you were spot on about my selections that did not include photos. Another favorite of mine is Lyda Roberti who died very young.
