Freaking AWESOME Movie! I think that Bill Paxton should have gotten a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award Nomination for it.

Sensational film. James Cameron really raised the stakes in this one . Probably my favorite Alien film too. 10/10

One of my favorite all time favorite films...
And one of the few good sequels ever made.
Even fewer, possibly better, than the original movies!

I have always believed that whenever someone says, "So and so should have been nominated" I want to say, "Only 5 slots are available for an acting category nomination. Who would you bump to fit in your choice?"
The five nominees for films of 1986 were:
Michael Caine for Hannah and Her Sisters (the winner) Tom Berenger for Platoon Willem Dafoe for Platoon Denholm Elliot for A Room With A View Dennis Hopper for Hoosiers
A pretty strong year for Supporting Actors. While Paxton was surely memorable (I can recite all of Hudson's lines whenever I watch the movie), a great argument could also be made for the five actors who made it in. You can't just say, "He should have been nominated" and let it stop there.

I don't think it's as great as most people do but it is still a good movie. Great technical aspects, Weaver at the top of her game, Bishop is awesome and it has some very memorable scenes. This is one of the best scenes James Cameron has ever directed. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RS-x1AzjqLQI actually think Paxton is bad in the movie and the whole idea for the movie is a perfect example of more is less. 7.5/10

I agree with your first sentence but I would have nominated Hopper for Blue Velvet and nominated Day-Lewis over Elliot for the same movie. I also think Christopher Walken in At Close Range is better than Elliot. I am someone who actually makes my own line-ups. Not everyone agrees about which performances were best, though I can't even comprehend thinking Paxton is nomination worthy in Aliens. You really think everyone is going to agree (even remotely) about which 5 supporting performances are best in any given year out of 100s of performances?

Love the movie and Love Bill, but I'm not even sure he's the best supporting actor in the movie itself (that would be Lance Henriksen), much less nomination worthy...

What do people see in Paxton's performance? Yeah, he yells and whines and acts scared a lot but he doesn't do it very convincingly imo.

Bill provides levity in a movie which needs it...Everything else is dead serious, but 'Hudson' gives unintentionally funny lines which give the viewer a momentary break and he can also be seen as the audience surrogate, because we all might freak out in his fashion if faced with the situation...I think that's why the part is so beloved...

So his bad acting is suppose to be funny? Sorry, but his performance takes me out of the movie and I don't find his acting and lines funny...I find them cringe-y. I get that he is suppose to be the audience surrogate but that has nothing to do with his performance, it seems to me that would be written in the screenplay. Another problem is that it isn't like his bad acting is intentional since he bad acts in most of his movies up until Tombstone. Just my take.

Thanks for answering my question btw. I just see it differently. His performance had a much different effect on me than most people I guess.

I loved it too. My only wish is they had made 'Alien 3' more like 'Aliens' 'cause while I didn't mind 'Alien 3' I think it should have been 'Alien 4' and another movie like 'Aliens' should have been made in between.

Did you ever see The Assembly Cut of " ALIEN 3" ? It is almost a Completely Different Movie than the Theatrical Version is.

Loved Paxton - he has some of he best one-liners ever. www.imdb.com/character/ch0000855/quotesI like this one, which didn't make that list: Pvt. Hudson - " Hey, Sarge... You'll get lip cancer smoking those!"
