OK, double checked -- Merrick did have a mother. QM is regrouping. And she wasn't played by Wendy Hiller. Two actresses played John Merrick's mother -- Phoebe Nicholls, who is seen being trampled by elephants at the beginning of the film, and Lydia Lisle, whose voice we hear reciting a passage from Tennyson's "Nothing Will Die" at the conclusion. Oh great! NOW you tell me, Mick! Where were you when I really needed you?

Since Richard Long played in four Ma and Pa Kettle movies, which one did you count as a Marjorie Main match up?

Can you see why? But. a young Natalie Wood played one of Fred MacMurray's daughters in the latter. I loved them both as a kid, but I probably remember seeing Never a Dull Moment at a drive-in with my family. It makes sense since I would have been about 7 at the time. Speaking of Marjorie Main, I think that the scene with her and her daughters really made Friendly Persuasion worse for me. Just too madcap for me .......
