I think even the most diehard Trek fans felt the first film missed the mark but still had a lot to like. One of the very first dvd's I bought was STTMP Director's Cut and I still have it and it is the best, most dramatic improvement on any director's cut I have so far seen. Before this, I would have given TMP around a generous 7/10. It is very slow and has too many scenes that simply do not work and it had an ending that was too ambiguous. This director's cut cures most of that. The ending now makes more sense, thanks to completed effects on V'Ger. The unnecessary scenes are largely removed, especially the ones where Kirk is visibly annoyed with McCoy (after having just told him 'dammit, Bones, I need you') and a few others added. This is a huge improvement on the original film. While it is still slow, it it not as slow, it still retains an epic feel (the only Trek film to pull that off IMO), has that magnificent score by Jerry Goldsmith and has a unique look that many have mocked but I like. And this is a beautiful film. The effects are truly spectacular and hold up well. 9/10

I loved the new visual effects. I think it improved the movie.
But, I hated the new sound effects, especially during the Asteroid/Wormhole sequence.
The Director's Cut is a 50/50 for me.
I bought the original cast DVD box set which included the Director's Cut. A few years later, I picked up the Theatrical Cut/Wrath of Khan double feature on DVD. Now I can watch either... which I don't do that much. The Motion Picture is one of my least favorite films.

I havent watched the original in years--the director's cut is what I had on DVD. It has some good moments but feels so mechanical and Shatner unfortunately isn't as with the role as he should be (but he is closer in spirit to the character than he was in ST 2 where he has become neurotic and artificially feeble).
It is really a case where they had the world handed to them and didnt know what to do with it. None of the later films had the same budget or scale. And the crew was still thin!
Harlan Ellison's idea of an alien lizard race that alters history to prevent dinosaurs from going extinct sounded much more compelling (we can thank Michael Eisner's friend Jon Peters(?) for ruining that by insisting that Mayans be included). Stephen King recalled the story in a book-saying Eisner had a "hairdressing" friend who pissed Ellison off by wanting Chariots of the Gods included in the plot.

Cut it down to about 45 minutes, and it would work. It features CAPTAIN KIRK, back in command. Starfleet orders the Enterprise to investigate a mysterious phenomenon that comes to Earth looking for it's creator. In fact, V'GER is very similar to NOMAD.

I'm not entirely certain that I've seen the director's cut. I don't think the movie needed that much tweaking in the first place, however. I think it's one of the better stories in the movie series, even though the final product could have been better with some more terse storytelling, direction, and/or editing. And the bland uniforms didn't help.

Good visuals, but the idea of the story: the voyager probe returns as a part of an as utterly superior enity but is spoken and spelled differently because they can't even clean that thing...wow (Aside from the fact the voyager probe are still in our "front yard" - did they come up with some wormhole crap?!)
7/10
The tv show had so many great episodes with fantastic ideas and premises and than that...

Did you forget about the Nomad probe & Dr. Jackson Roykirk from the episode called " The Changeling"? It's basically the same story. but is spoken and spelled differently because they can't even clean that thing... Voyager 6 was built into V'GER by machines. Maybe just they didn't think to clean it... Alright, this IS a bit of a stretch... Aside from the fact the voyager probe are still in our "front yard" - did they come up with some wormhole crap?!) No. "Voyager 1" is no longer considered to be in our "Front Yard"... And... Did you actually watch the film? 1999? + 35 Years = 2034
2273 - 2034 = 239 YearsVoyager 6 has, at least, 239 Years to get dirty, fall into a "black hole", get rebuilt as V'GER by machines, and travel back to Earth... Sure it is a bit far fetched, but not impossible. Isn't all science fiction a bit far fetched anyways?

I respect its ideas more than I enjoy watching it. It's so slow and I feel it doesn't show enough of the crew's interactions as much as I'd like.
