How many have there been.....of each? Actors ? Actresses ? This would not include "special Oscars" or "honorary Oscars." A couple of online sites will give you a great answers and are fun places to explore. Total # 6 -- 1980-1989 : 56 Actors / 52 Actresses

Very close: ALL Oscar-nominated Actresses www.imdb.com/list/ls008360932/This was created by an IMDb user known as spearsdwAll Oscar-Nominated Actorswww.imdb.com/list/ls057148557/This was created by an IMDb user known as margannlaurissa25Note: IMO, the Actress list is MUCH better. It gives more information (year, category, etc), lists all the performers in Last Name alphabetical order, and includes the names of the movies for which the performers were nominated and indicates (with and *) those for which they won the Oscar.
For all I know, your list may be just as good as--or even better than--the IMDb users that created the above lists since they are just people like you or me. Right? I don't know if they have any special knowledge of movie cataloging.
However, if you click directly on the actor's or actress's names in either list, it will take you back to the performer's IMDb filmography.

By my count (not my strong suit) I came up with this: 1927/28 to 2016: 437 actor nominees and 89 Best Actor winners, including a tie in 1931/32 between Wallace Beery and Fredric March, who were both winners. In 1928/29 there were no official nominees, but 5 were considered by the committee and the winner, Warner Baxger, was announced at the dinner. I counted all 5 as de-facto nominees, although the Academy doesn't consider them so. 1927/28 to 2016: 435 actress nominees and 89 Best Actress winners, including a tie in 1968 between Katherine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand, who were both winners. Again, in 1928/1929 there were no official nominees, but 5 were considered by the committee and the winner, Mary Pickford, was announced at the dinner. And again, I counted all 5 as de-facto nominees. In 1934 Bette Davis was a write-in nominee, but the Academy doesn't consider her an actual nominee that year. NOTE: Until 1936 there were variations in the number of nominees each year; since then there have been only five nominees a year. SOURCES: Best Actor Oscar nominees/winners Best Actress Oscar nominees/winners Academy Awards DatabaseSpider, Did you account for the fact that there are MANY multiple Oscar nominees--both actors and actresses? Remember that both Katherine Hepburn and Meryl Streep can each only be counted once. Also, there are many actors and actresses in the 5+ nomination category and they all only count once: www.imdb.com/list/ls056435629/

Oh, kijii , I completely misunderstood your thread!! But oh, man, I don't know if I have it in me to count them all again. I counted and counted and counted. So sorry I didn't get it right the first time. P.S. I also only included Best Actor and Actresses, and I guess you mean supporting as well. In any case, I'll defer to your assessment above. Sigh. . . Spider, Yes, I probably didn't state it clearly enough. But. everyone (actor or actress) who won had to have been a nominee first. And, I was not distinguishing them as to whether they won or not. Also, several (from each gender) may have won as both a Best Supporting Performer and as a Best Performer. Let's use Ingrid Bergman as an example: 1978 - BA: Autumn Sonata 1974 - BSA: Murder on the Orient Express * 1956 - BA: Anastasia * 1948 - BA: Joan of Arc 1945 - BA: The Bells of St. Mary's 1944 - BA: Gaslight * 1943 - BA: For Whom the Bell Tolls Notice that she only counts once (in the tabulation) as a nominee. YET, she was nominated 7 times and won 3 of those times. Then of those 3 wins, 2 were as a Best Actress ( Anastasia and Gaslight) and 1 was as a Best Supporting Actress ( Murder on the Orient Express). It's complicated....... no?

Double-checked my totals of actors (458) and actresses (452) ever nominated (once or multiples counted only once) for performance in either category, and came up with the same numbers.

kijii "It's complicated....... no?" Oh, yes, for me, indeed! But not for mattgarth , the genius. Very interesting question, actually. And the answer is interesting as well. Spider, I was just thinking that according to my OP question, actresses like Katharine Hepburn and Meryl Streep would count no more than actresses like Mo'Nique (from Precious) and Quvenzhané Wallis (from Beasts of the Southern Wild). They all just count as one nominee in the final analysis. This is not to say that these little girls will never be nominated again and become great actresses; they might. But, as you can see, there is no presumption of relative greatness in the total number of nominees; they all would count the same.

Dear Elite Member, I would trust YOUR counts more than those on those two sites mentioned, and cited, in this thread. Now, if you would just find the 1 extra actress you found that spearsdw (the better or the two cites, IMHO) missed.......... ----------------------------------- BTW, the expression "let your hair down" no longer has any meaning for me personally...it's gone and it ain't coming back. The nice part is I don't have to worry about it anymore, nor comb it either. I've already been thinking that those of us who are "follicly challenged" should be able to buy and wear fashionable caps in various colors and designs--indoors or out. Why not make it a new fashion statement?
