all the die hard sequels? Is it because it came out right after 1993? NOt to say it's a great movie by any stretch, it is just obviously to me so much better than the sequels.

1.Die Hard With a Vengeance (1995) - 8/10 (within my Top 60 movies) 2.Die Hard (1988) - 7.5-8/10 (within my Top 108 movies) 3.Die Hard 2 (1990) - 6-6.5/10 (within my Top 247 movies) 4.Live Free or Die Hard (2007) - 6/10 (a mild Thumbs Up) 5.A Good Day to Die Hard (2013) - 2/10 (boring(although i did mildly like it on my initial viewing but could not finish it on a re-watch)) While it might not be great (great as in 9/10 or 10/10 level) it's close enough to that range Probably at least partially because of the cast/director i suspect.

Because the people now making the decisions in the studio are like those ruthless office people shown eating popcorn as they watch the aftermath of the Wall Street bomb in the film.
The 90s was the time when the more competent studio execs were still around and the companies were smaller too. Media mergers were just beginning to happen.
That's pretty much the reason.
With a Vengeance has its own political BS but it feels so much milder since it has lots of entertainment value. Die Hard 4 was shockingly bad.

It's ties to the first film and the chemistry between Willis and Jackson.

McTienrnan understood the material better and was simply a more talented director than Harlin, Len "Underworld" Wiseman and John "Max Payne" Moore..

Die Hard & Die Hard With a Vengeance are the only great ones imo.

I don't know but I agree that after 3 the movie series went downhill and I wonder what happened to the rumoured movie they were making that was going to take place in NASA and have the return of William Atherton. From what I remember reading it was going to be a return to the form of the first two movies and John McClane would have had to work with Richard Thornburg to save everybody.
