Ben Turpin ... Cross-Eyed Comic who worked in Vaudeville, Burlesque and circuses. He first appeared in film in 1907. His last film was "Saps at Sea," with Laurel and Hardy in 1940. Many stories circulate about his crossed eyes , apparently after playing the cross-eyed character ‘Happy Hooligan’ in vaudeville several times a day, he found that one day, his right eye was stuck in position as a result of the repeated strain. With his trade mark scrubbing brush moustache, and long neck with globular Adam’s apple Turpin was once dubbed the living gargoyle ...
