So fantastic. As a fan of Stephen King novels and the horror genre in general this movie worked so well. The acting was pretty great all around, which is typically one of the biggest concerns with child centric movies but all of the cast did a fantastic job here...particularly Sophia Lillis as Beverly. Ritchie was also hilarious here and provided a great deal of comic relief that didn't feel cheesy. Each of the kids have their own individual run ins with Pennywise, in the form of whatever they fear most, and they're all pretty great. Stans and Bills were probably my favorite as far as creeping me out. The movie is a bit long at over 2 hours but for the most part it feels fine. There isn't too much fluff that isn't related to Pennywise in some way. A few friend building montages and the like. They did a pretty good job alluding to the level of power Pennywise actually has. That he's not just some creepy clown creature in the sewer but rather an evil force that manipulates the entire town in many ways. It's shown very well in the ways that the kids are treated by pretty much every adult in the film. It pushes the feeling that if they didn't stand up for themselves nobody else would.
I only have a few complaints...biggest one is that at least one of the big action sequences cuts from angle to angle what feels like 3 times a second. So I actually felt a little dizzy while trying to watch it on the big screen because the pov changes frantically. Other than that it's mostly character development issues with...particularly Mike. He felt a little tacked on in this film whereas he felt more prominent in the book at least. Also I was hoping the bullies would get fleshed out more than they were. Particularly Victor Criss. Henry is done well, but Vic and Belch are almost set pieces with no development and even Patrick Hockstetter gets passed over a lot. In the books Patrick and Victor have a much bigger presence and it would've been nice to see a scene or a line or two referencing some of that here.
All in all I definitely recommend seeing it. It's both fun and scary and they did the book justice. Can't wait for part 2.
