Were they? Why? When the spidey franchise has never made even $900m, the last film having done the worst and this being yet another reboot of a film series only 15 years old, a billion was certain fans expectations but I don't recall hearing that was the studios expectations, the lower budget indicates to me Sony being more conservative in regards to the box office expectations for SMH.
Also Weirdraptor BVS's budget was $300m gross but $250m net so in that very rudermentary breakdown of cost/profit BVS is $100m more profitable than you make it out, though obviously we all know the actual profit to cost thing is a lot more complex than that, anyway just pointing it out, given even with an additional $100m BVS in that breakdown is still way less profitable than SMH there's no need to short change it.
No they weren't, I was mockingly imitating mellomoviereview who believed Sony was expecting a billion for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Well now I feel like a numpty.

The movie is really winding down now. It's all but finished in China as it only did $200,000 on Friday so it'll probably finish with about $116 million total.
It should be around $876.5 million now. It'll either struggle to get to $880 million or it just won't. All it's really got left is the little boost in the US from the dollar theatres.

And that's a solid success, nice work, and thanks for keeping up with some of that.
It's crazy that it blew past the original 2, and the only one above it is the one a large portion of people consider the worst of the series. lol. That's kind of hilarious honestly. But it deserved to be in the position it's in. It's a really good film, with a lot of subtlety which I appreciated, and I can't wait to see where they go with him in Avengers and then in the sequel. Should be awesome to watch this version develop.
It still amazes me how the China market is somehow so top heavy. I just don't get that. Like everybody agrees to just go see things the first weekend and that's it. Weird.

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING debuted on Friday with est. ¥144M/¥135M ($22.2M/$20.8M) with/without online ticketing fees. Looks like the estimate for the opening weekend is $70-75 million. So it should pass Wonder Woman and maybe the original Spider-man movie this weekend worldwide. Damn so it's going to fly by Wonder Woman and end up being the second highest grossing Spiderman Film behind Spiderman 3?
It's so funny that people sort of dismissed how big Homecoming has been simply because China opened later. Imagine if this 70 mill had been there a month ago and it was already past WW.
The first Spider-Man made a billion dollars if you take inflation into account.

So they've finally bothered to update the movie, it's now at $877.5 million.
Again if it's lucky it'll find some way to crawl to $880 million and that's it.
I won't bother updating this no more as at this point it's pretty much done with.
