The musical melodrama 'Lulu Belle' is based on a hit play from 1926 written by Charles MacArthur and Edward Sheldon. The sensational story behind 'Lulu Belle' is told largely through flashbacks and recollections. Saloon singer Lulu Belle (Dorothy Lamour) has a residency at a small bar in Natchez, Mississippi. She meets surly lawyer George Davis (George Montgomery) during some rough and tumble, a Mississippi bigshot on the rise. Davis is due to be married but must contend with Lulu's many suitors, including brash boxer Butch Cooper (Greg McClure), sleazy fight promoter Mark Brady (Albert Dekker) and dull aristocrat Harry Randolph (Otto Kruger). None of them can face a scandal yet none of them can resist Lulu. Dorothy Lamour
Leslie Fenton's rudimentary direction (the battles & boxing bouts are bereft of imagination) fortunately fails to derail this handsome love express showcasing Dorothy Lamour as the ultimate southern siren Lulu Belle and Glenda Farrell as her confidante Molly Benson. Lamour sings some terrific tunes including 'Sweetie Pie'. "In my day, the films were romantic. Now they're all raw sex. I don't know what I'd be doing in pictures if I were starting out today. I certainly wouldn't be doing what most of them are doing. As for my sarong, that would be like wearing long underwear today."
- Dorothy Lamour, 'Conversations With Classic Film Stars'

Sensuality + sexy + beauty + humour = Dorothy Lamour She was at one point Paramount's highest payed female star, and Bing allways got her over Bob, except when Bing wasn't around. That she was more than a sexy attraction she showed in A Medal for Benny 1945. I actually have this album, it's mostly from old radio shows and Road to Bali, I keep it because I love the pic, and I like to display it from time to time. George Montgomery, I wrote about it on a thread on the old forums, just like John Payne, James Craig and a few other guys, during WW2, when many stars did their war duty enlisting, other raised to take their places. When the war was over the big companies more or less dumped those actors. George Montgomery got the bad half of it, while others did colour movies, he ended up doing black and white pictures in the 1950s, that l"loaned" expensive action scenes from other movies. Since he was married to Dinah Shore many visited their home and many was impressed by their furniture, that turned out that Montgomery had done himself, so when his star dwindled he created a very successful furniture bussiness instead during the 1950s. That might also explain that he acts duller than a door knob in some movies, he didn't care anymore. 1968, George showing of some furniture he made, in Queen Anne style.

I've not seen 'A Medal For Benny', thanks for the recommendation teleadm. Fascinating to learn a bit about George Montgomery, an actor I know nothing about. He's fine in 'Lulu Belle' but I feel it's Lamour's picture all the way.
