Well so many wanted to see JJ have to deal with the "mess" they believed he made of it all. It's gonna happen! I was hoping for Johnson just to finish it out, because I like what I have seen from him so far, but it will be interesting to see if it all ties together in the end. I believe it will.

See they were on the right track by hiring auteurs like Johnson and Trevarrow and allowing them to write and direct. A single vision for each film, I like it. Now it will probably be conceived by committee. Three writers, one of them (JJ) isn't the most inspired writer.
But there could be worse I guess. I just hope that the story is bold. Kylo killing Han made The Force Awakens for me. If not for that I wouldn't have cared for it.

Yousa just knew this was comin'! More Disney warrior princess stories disguised as real SW by being buried under tons of copy-and-pasted rehash of da OT.

I don't like the move but ironically I'm glad they're doing it now. Really production demands kind of force them to. But this way it puts an end to all the smoke and mirrors strategy that they've used from the beginning. The efforts of always trying to advertise their SW movies as if it has everything every type of SW fan would want.
The trailers packaged with misleading characterization and disguising some of the tone of film don't matter anymore. Neither do all the veneer leadership choices that might create false impressions about how the movie might be styled (based on writer/director choices).
With Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy in the respective positions that they're in on episode 9 it's crystal clear what brand of SW we're going to get for the rest of the trilogy. And perhaps beyond. It's the TFA formula through and through. And it doesn't matter how many trailers they release or PR moves they make that look otherwise, we now know it's still going to be TFA in essence. And we can make a decision to see it or not based solely off of that TFA branding.

I'd be ok with JJ directing...but why does he have to write the script too???
Let someone else handle the script please!

It's whatever at this point. He's the only guy that seems to REALLY bend to the studio, so it's in no way surprising.
Maybe he can learn from what he did wrong in TFA and grow some balls with his storytelling.

Johnson was supposed to do the treatment. Impossible to tell how much the script from the original treatment will differ. That hasn't been the case since at least April 2017, when Johnson was asked about it on Twitter. His response was: "That's old info, I haven't been involved in writing 9." www.slashfilm.com/star-wars-episode-9-treatment/So at some point, Disney yanked that option off the table.

I wonder who's been writing it? Trevorrow? That would indeed be interesting.

Actually, I shouldn't assume it was Disney's decision. I can see Rian, himself, deciding not to do the writing for Episode 9, so he can focus on making 8 great. Who knows though...
