Ok I know it was years ago when this was made and that it never got made into a series, but after watching the pilot for it again after how many years I have so many questions and issues with it.
Who exactly was this aimed towards? The fans of the Munsters wouldn't watch it because they pretty much fucked up the entire premise of the munsters. It was too dark for kids and people who didn't grow up with the munsters wouldn't get it.
Was anyone asking for a Munsters reboot? Truthfully the Munsters only worked the first time because it was spoofing the universal monster movies. It doesen't exactly work today if you don't stick with the original premise. As far as I was aware no one was asking for a reboot of the munsters anyway.
I have a lot of issues with the pilot. I don't think a dark tone works well for The Munsters. It just came off really awkward in the pilot and actually kinda made me feel uncomfortable.
It wasn't really that funny. The Munsters at the time was pretty funny. There was a running joke in the original where Marylin would get teased because to the family she's supposed to be the freak, but everyone else is a monster. They did the same thing in Mockingbird Lane, but the joke doesen't work because everyone in the family looks normal. There also weren't many jokes in the pilot.
They didn't look like monsters. Except for a few things here and there they looked completely normal. I know this was going on a different direction, but the family not looking like Monsters defeats the whole premise of the show.
The cast seemed off. My biggest gripe is with Jerry O'Connell. He was not really the best choice for Herman. Something about him just did not sit right with me. His Herman felt like a totally different character all together. Brad Garrett truthfully should have been Herman so missed opporutunity there. Everyone else was "fine?" I guess.
Was it supposed to be a horror version of The Munsters? I wasn't really sure if this was supposed to be funny or not. If there were jokes they must not have been very good.
In the end I can see why NBC didn't pick this up. It shows exactly what not to do with an established property. I could have understood if this was a take on The Addams Family, but it wasn't. It was The Munsters and that's why this show did not work for me. I can't even believe they're trying to reboot The Munsters again. Just leave it alone.
