Kane made her professional theatre debut in 1966 when she appeared in 'The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie', Jay Presson Allen's play based on a novel by Muriel Spark and filmed by Ronald Neame in 1969. Since then she has appeared regularly on the New York Stage both on and off-Broadway, notably in the plays of Beth Henley. Kane finally made her West End debut in London, England in January 2011, having been signed up to appear alongside Ellen Burstyn in a major revival of Lillian Hellman's drama 'The Children's Hour'. She is also known for her portrayal of evil headmistress Madame Morrible in the Broadway musical 'Wicked', a part she played in various productions from 2005 to 2014 having made her debut on the 1st National Tour (playing the role from March 9th through December 19th, 2005).
"Love Streams" may have been John Cassavetes' last personal film -- the filmmaker died in 1989 -- but it wasn't his last personal project. Often omitted in assessments of the director's career is another play that he wrote and staged titled "Woman of Mystery," which opened in 1987 at a theater on La Cienega Blvd. in L.A. The play follows a woman (Gena Rowlands) who at first appears as a bag lady but changes identities multiple times. Carol Kane played a woman who may or may not be her daughter. Rumor had it that Cassavetes wanted to turn it into a movie."

Kane has always credited director Mike Nichols with her break into films for casting her in 'Carnal Knowledge' (1971). She plays the role of Myth in 'The Muppet Movie' (1979) and is an acknowledged fantasy horror icon having appeared in a number of genre pictures over the years. Her film work has taken her around the globe, from France and Spain, to Canada and Australia. She is currently being sought by her friend and frequent collaborator Steve Buscemi for a comedy in the proverbial pipeline.
"I had only done dramatic work. I had done a movie called 'Hester Street', a low-budget independent black and white movie, and I got [Oscar] nominated for best actress. And after I didn't work for a solid year. The first and only phone call that came through after that was from Gene Wilder. He said, 'You want to be my costar in a Hollywood movie?' It was 'The World's Greatest Lover'. I have no idea how that happened, but I was a lucky gal. I had no idea how he thought that would be a good idea! I had never done any comedy before. I think he just saw something that seemed, to him, right for the part of his wife in that movie. He called me and asked me if I wanted to do it. Just like that, out of the blue. We had a meeting at 20th Century Fox and sat in his office, and we talked and I said, 'Yeah.' It was a lovely movie. Maybe it didn't get the publicity it should have, but it's a lovely movie that deserves revisiting. It's quite unique. He was very beloved by his crew. There was an incredible triumvirate of comedians that hung out together at that time that I was privileged to be around, and that was Dom Deluise, Gene and Mel Brooks. They were special guys to know and wildly different from each other, yet had creativity that married well. He was very unique and very brave. And generous as a director. The first movie I saw him in was 'Bonnie and Clyde', which was unforgettable. What I think is great about the question of what he'll be most remembered for is that each person asked will have a different answer. Be it 'Blazing Saddles' or 'Willy Wonka', that's just an honorable position as an artist. Every person you ask would have a different favorite. You can't possibly say, 'This is the one,' because there are so many great 'ones.' "

Kane's television credits include portraying Simka Dahblitz-Gravas, wife of Latka Gravas (Andy Kaufman), on the American television series 'Taxi' from 1981 to 1983, for which she earned two Emmy Awards. Kane went on to appear in the hit sitcom 'Cheers' as Amanda, an acquaintance of Diane (Shelley Long) from the mental institution, and took a regular role in 'Pearl' (1996 - 1997) which co-starred Rhea Perlman and Malcolm McDowell. She also played crooked mystic Olga in the 'Laverne & Shirley' episode 'Jinxed'. Kane is currently appearing in the television series 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt'.
"I got to work with Charlie Durning again on 'When A Stranger Calls'. I think I did four or five movies with him over the years, maybe even five or six. I just adored him. And I think the director Fred Walton was so talented, because he did these terrifying movies with almost no blood. They’re just the kind of classic suspense of a [Alfred] Hitchcock kind of movie. I think they were great. And it was really interesting to have all that time go by between them and revisit. And because Charlie was in both of them, there’s a lot of continuity, even though there was so much time in between."
