Driving cross country, imagining STAR WARS sequels after the first film, we worked out that Vader was Luke's father, that Leia was his sister and also a Jedi. You don't need the Boys Big Book of Screenwriting cliches to work this stuff out. However, I did predict Leia would turn to the darkside. wmcclain, I don't know you, I have no reason to write what I'm about to write, I have absolutely no beef with you whatsoever, and I almost certainly will be seen as the bad guy in this scenario, but here goes...
BULLSHIT! I call BULLSHIT on that! You did NOT work out that Vader was their father or that Luke and Leia were brother and sister! You are SOOOOOOOOO full of shit. There is absolutely NOTHING in Star Wars (ANH) that points to any of that.
And I'll even go this far: Even George fucking Lucas didn't know any of that either! That was stuff he and Lawrence Kasdan came up with while writing the script to ESB.
All that being said, wmcclain... I hope that we can be friends after this. (lol)
(Even worse, the other guy in the car died in 1983). They should have hired us! We would have delivered faster and under budget! Pizza and beer. What can I say? A movie plot can go only so many ways and be acceptable to the audience. That all this storm and adventure turns out to be about family: it ain't brain surgery. Leia would be more interesting if she were evil, don't you think? Star Wars (1977)The Empire Strikes Back (1980)Return of the Jedi (1983)

I don't recall any discernible audience reaction. If there was one it wasn't noticeable enough for me to remember it.

I would say there was as much a lack of noticeable shock at the revelation as there was a lack of noticeable awe at the opening shot in Star Wars (though to be fair how do you measure "awe")

I did. One young woman in the audience stood up and yelled "No, that's a lie!"
No, not really. I don't recall any particular audience reaction, other than my own surprise.
