The fact that Hallowe'en is fast-approaching, and all the horror-y talk about It and Stephen King, reminded me of a favorite author of mine (but one whose work I haven't read in a while), Carl R. Jacobi (the "R." to distinguish him from German mathematician Carl G.J. Jacobi) -- -- who is not, believe it or not, the person I used to use as my avatar, who was another favorite author of mine, mystery writer John Dickson Carr. (No, I can't explain why these two writers I like look so similar, but the coincidence amuses me.) Anyhoo, with Jacobi: He's probably not very well-known nowadays because he wrote mainly in the pulps, but Lovecraft and several other critics thought he was one of the best horror writers of them all, and I'd agree. One of his best stories is called "Revelations in Black," which (and I know this is a strange comparison) reminds me of a turned-on-its-head version of that beautiful song " Stardust." (Again, a strange comparison, but if you've read it, you may know what I mean.) The ending is not as good as the build-up, but that build-up is so good and so eerie that the story is on my list of favorite horror tales. Does anyone else know the story--or Jacobi?

I'll take that deafening silence as a "no." I suppose I won't attempt a post about Russell Kirk, then...

politicidal mentioned Robert Chambers’ King in Yellow stories elsewhere, so I’m going to attempt to bring back this thread on another unfairly-obscure horror writer… Someone really ought to make a movie of “Revelations in Black.” I attempted a synopsis for one here.

Well, this thread has, as usual, gone nowhere remarkably quickly…
