Historic photo revives interest in Negro League's St. Louis StarsBy Dan OβNeill St. Louis Post-Dispatch Nov 14, 2016The Missouri Historical Society found a rare photograph of the stadium on the former site of the Negro National League Stars' Park. The ballpark opened in 1922 and was located at the northeast corner of Compton and Market Streets. The site is now part of Harris-Stowe's baseball field and is marked with a plaque. The stadium hosted Negro Leagues baseball until the Stars were disbanded in 1931. Sallwasser, a photo archivist for the Missouri Historical Society, was recently identifying and cataloging negatives received from a collection when she came across an image of a ballpark. Initially, Sallwasser believed the 1922 photo to be an exterior view of Sportsmanβs Park, which stood at North Grand Boulevard and Dodier Street from 1902 to 1966. That ballpark, purchased by Anheuser-Busch and renamed Busch Stadium in 1953, was the cityβs major league hub until a stadium opened downtown in 1966.

My dad proposed to my mom 10 minutes after Maz hit the HR. My Dad, a huge Yankees fan, turned to her and said, "Well, everything else has gone wrong today, I might as well ask you to marry me." Quite the charmer was ol' Pa, wasn't he?

Quite the charmer was ol' Pa, wasn't he? nice! classy story. That's the story they told us kids. "If that (expletive deleted) Ralph Terry has struck out Mazeroski, none of you kids would be here". He blamed Tony Kubek for booting the grounder in the 8th inning. Yeah, my Dad was as romantic as a ham sandwich on pumpernickel.
