With a community that prides itself on acting obsessions, I wonder how you people feel about the merits of these two dominant schools of acting. Do you feel the method possessed a more naturalistic grace to the screen, or just a bunch of phoniness that doesn't require ACTING? Should the classical style stay in the theater, or is there a place for that stylization in the cinema, a medium that is consider to be less artificial?

I like classical and method acting equally. I don't really prefer one over the other.

As long as it results in a good performance.

I don't care as long as the performance is good.

By "classical" do you also mean "Shakespearean"?

It's all about screen presence at the end of the day. some have it and some don't. the ones that do tend to be able to do get the leading roles and command peoples attention (basically most of the a-listers) and those that don't are usually best suited to supporting roles and then you might have that semi-alist type that can lead a movie occasionally in the right role but are usually best suited for co-lead or supporting roles. ------------------------------------------------ RiP, IMDbI see you changed your beagle picture that thing would get away with murder if i had it as, like i mentioned to you not long ago, beagles are hands down my favorite dog. they are priceless and they got that look that makes you 'crack under the pressure' (i.e. like that look they give you when they want something) quickly. we had a lab/beagle mix (from 1996 til she passed in 2009 ) and that thing could read you like a book. lol ; like sometimes we had to sneak our shoes out of the house if we were going somewhere as if the beagle seen em it would know we were going somewhere and then try to force us to bring it. lol ; or sometimes i would try to fake like i was sleeping when laying in bed (like when your tired) so i could get someone else to let it go outside to take a leak as you could hear it coming towards you in the distance and it would largely see through our BS and start barking. like i could see it studying me (like squinting my eyes so they where largely closed) and sometimes it would be hard not to bust out laughing as it's like it's radar was on full blast trying to see if you were actually sleeping or just faking it. lol ; but once in a while i could pull it off and not long after you could hear it went and got someone else to let it outside to take a leak. etc etc. good memories

Quotes from the great Spencer Tracy;
-The kids keep telling me I should try this new "Method Acting" but I'm too old, I'm too tired and I'm too talented to care.
- I'm Spencer Tracy with some deference to the character. When a person says he's an actor - he's a personality. The whole idea is to show your personality. There are people who are much better technically, but who cares? Nobody cares.
-Why do actors think they're so God damn important? They're not. Acting is not an important job in the scheme of things. Plumbing is.

Tracy was my favorite actor of that era because his acting was closer to real life than anyone else’s. I’d put Fonda there, too.

Dustin Hoffman, that confirmed method actor, when trying to manipulate himself into character while playing against Sir Laurence Olivier (on the set of "Marathon Man" I believe) asked Larry what to do. Larry simply replied, "Try acting dear boy, try acting."
