"The night has fangs."Three beautiful American students decides to pack up their bags and get ready to take a closer look at the history and culture of Romania. But what they instead uncover, is an old and bitter family feud between two rival sons, that has been going on for centuries and one that could at any moment explode into a bloodbath, if the brutal and dangerous vampire Radu (Anders Hove) is not stopped.I got a hold of the Complete Chronicles DVD set for absolute dirt cheap back in 2012 which contained all four Subspecies movies along with the spin-off Vampire Journals. Most of them were shot in Romania, on-location and I like that, it makes up for a pretty cool atmosphere and even though the films are pretty way below "standard" vampire films of the early 90s, but as with most of Full Moon Pictures late 80s and early 90s titles, they do come with lots of b-movie charm. Anders Hove looked pretty bad ass as Radu, who reminded me a bit of the more classic vampires with his creepy long fingers and specially the way he walked. You also get some nice gory parts thrown in there along with some always pleasantly shots of tits & ass, decapitated body parts, a bit of classic stop-motion and one of the hottest vampire babes ever, with Denice Duff as Radu's innocent "fledling" Michelle. The first one is easily the best, but I kind of enjoyed watching the later ones too, well, maybe not Vampire Journals as that one was pretty brutal.

To really complete the series, you would need to watch Vampire Journals (1997), which is a spinoff of the Subspecies series.

A neat spin on old school vampire mythos. It's easy to get lost in these movies during a downpour on a wet grey afternoon, raindrops chipping away aggressively at the windowpane. They send a shiver and a quiver down your spine.

Sorry about the bump, but could not find any other threads about the film series, and somehow the upcoming Blood Rise: Subspecies V (2023) trailer, caught me completely off guard. Had heard some rumours surrounding another chapter a few years ago, but that the whole pandemic kept it shut down, or so it seemed.
Anyway, here is the trailer for the new film:

But hey, at least they brought back Anders Hove. That's something.

That's something. Yeah, most of the recent seen releases by Full Moon has not exactly been all that "great". But somehow I guess nostalgia, Anders Hove and Denice Duff, might fool me into going in with maybe a bit too high hopes, and well, it seems like it has hit off rather nicely, with an impressive 9.3 on IMDb, from 16 voters. Wonder how many of those that have actually seen it, or if they all worked on the film?

I watched all of these for the first time last October. They aren't the most timeless of movies but I enjoyed them for what they were. The first and second are a tossup for my favourite. I appreciated how ambitious they were, and Radu was a pretty cool villain. Even after the disappointment of the 4th one and that Full Moon has been less than stellar, to say the least, I hope 5 is a decent enough comeback. Besides, it is too early to judge with just 16 votes so far.
