Can you than really fully appreciate the song if you don`t understand the lyrics?
Personally i think you can. I just think you appreciate in a different way if you don`t understand the lyrics.

Yes. I don't normally pay much attention to lyrics when they're in English even. Lyrics aren't why I like music.

Actually about 80% of the albums I buy come from bands based outside the United States. But all those albums are, for the most part, English language albums. But I can appreciate the occasional foreign language track. I think it helps if you know the gist of what the song is about. Here's are a couple of examples from my music collection. Band: Stonecast Song: Compagnons Language: French Topic: friendship Band: U.D.O. Song: Basta Ya Language: Spanish Topic: income inequality

Yes, because the human voice is sound, and sound can be beautiful regardless of the meaning behind them.

Yes. Understanding the lyrics are not essential to move the listener. However, if you disagree:

Yep, as terrapin said, lyrics aren't a large part of why I appreciate the music I listen to in most cases.

Sometimes more. Opera in Italian beats opera in English any day.

tpfkar Can you than really fully appreciate the song if you don`t understand the lyrics? Personally i think you can. I just think you appreciate in a different way if you don`t understand the lyrics. Runs the gamut. Multiple interpretations can add to enjoyment. On the flip side a video that sinks in a particular interpretation also can really enhance a song. Du Hast

If I like the sound of the singer or singers voice/s and that the instruments are making then I like the song. Music is ALL about the sound to me.

I love it when an artist records a song in various languages. For example, ABBA recorded "Waterloo" in English, Swedish, French and German:
Yes, their attempt at German pronunciation is very poor. Still kinda cool though.

Still kinda cool though. Manowar did the same with "Heart of Steel", also recording a German version ("Herz Aus Stahl"). Since I don't speak German, I can't comment on the quality of their German pronunciation.

I do.
One song off the top of my head was Hélène by Roch Voisine. I was taking French in high school, and the teacher introduced us to the song.
I heard the English version of it, and....I wasn't a fan -- likely because I was so used to the French version.
I echo the sentiments of the majority here -- music is about the sound.
I mean....I look past the fact that Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony drop the 'N'-bomb 9 times in the first minute of the song "East 1999".

I'm more of a melody person so that's what I latch onto.

Many of us know this melody as 'Turkey in the Straw'. This version is a love song with different lyrics. I don't speak Ojibway, but the way she enunciates the words is sort of catchy.
