This is a film I saw bits of when my parents were watching it on TV back in either the late 90s or early 2000s - though the film itself is likely older than that. Does it sound familiar to anyone here? Note I may be misremembering some of the details which doesn't help matters.
The plot was a washed-up private detective is hired by a young woman to investigate the unsolved murder of her parents. The only witness to the murder was the woman's much younger brother. The brother was however so traumatised by what he saw that he no longer speaks sense but seems to refer to two figures as Captain Hook and Smee (though he pronounces it "Shmee"). It is assumed these are references to his parents' killers. Minor spoiler: After spending time with the child, the detective finds many of the boy's words seem to refer to sexual situations. The sister explains this away by surmising that their parents may have been having sex when they were murdered. Major spoiler: The detective realises that the sister was the one who murdered their parents because she found out the father was sexually abusing her brother and her mother stood by and let it happen. The father was Captain Hook and the mother Shmee (a combination of Smee and She). She covered it up and hired the detective to divert suspicion, assuming that the detective was too poor at his job to figure it out.
Sound familiar to anyone? I don't remember there being any well-known actors in it but at that age I might not have recognised some well-known actors. The detective looked a bit like Steve Martin if my shaky memory serves. The film kinda looked like it may have been a TV movie, maybe from the mid 90s but again that may be wrong. |
