There are several books on this enigmatic event listed on Amazon, and the reviews there give an idea of how successful their ultimate explanation of things appear to different readers. There is also at least one film (by Renny Harlin); it was reasonably spooky and suspenseful - but ended up with a preposterous ending that including teleporting mutants.
