Who else is watching this original Syfy series? It's one of my favorite things on television right now. Ostensibly it's a pastiche of "Harry Potter" and the "Narnia" series of books, except instead of courageous, noble children, the leads are shallow, hedonistic young adults who are often terrible people, yet it's more like the spiritual successor to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

Watched the first 4 episodes. Couldn't get into it. I thought the main character was too annoying couldn't stand him. Liked his girlfriend and some of the other characters but when the main character bugs you it is hard to watch a show.
It does have a Harry Potter sort of feel with the hidden magic school but that is about where that parallel ends.

It looked like a CW show to me, from what little I saw.

I started watching The Magicians towards the end of last year, as a friend of mine was into it and suggested it to me. It took a while for me to get into it, but Alice was the first character I was drawn to. I just thought that that Olivia Taylor Dudley was doing some really interesting stuff with her performance which made me intrigued by her character.
I liked that Alice excelled as a magician, but was also flawed and made mistakes. I might be one of the few (I’m not sure what the ‘popular’ opinion is), but I really like her and Quentin together. I think they’re a nice pair. I grew to quite enjoy the foursome of Quentin, Alice, Penny and Kady working together in the earlier episodes. I also liked what little we saw of Alice with Margo. Alice is just so endearing at times.
My other favourite character is Margo, who is so awesome and entertaining. She gets so many funny lines/moments and her relationship with Eliot is one of the best in the show, I think. This is the first role I’ve seen Summer Bishil in, and she’s just so lovely. She plays the role perfectly. I do like that underneath all the snarkiness, there are other layers. I really enjoyed the scenes she shared with Alice in the earlier episodes. And also her scene with Quentin in a later episode where she found a little common ground with him in enjoying the Fillory books – she seemed really sincere about that. I just wish Margo wasn’t missing from some episodes.
The only character I can't stand is Julia.

It looked like a CW show to me, from what little I saw. You probably didn't see enough. In terms of shocking scenes and story developments, it's more on par with 'Game of Thrones.'

I've been watching it, and so far I love it. At first I thought it was one of those tween angsty type of shows. But then it can get really dark and nasty! Alice is one of my favourite characters, and El and Penny then Quentin. It may take a little to kind of break the surface, and I think by default, as a school for magicians, it's bound to be compared to the infamous Harry Potter. But there are different tangents that it takes, different roads, and more mature themes. I'm enjoying it thus far.

It's a show about depressed young adults. All characters have bad relationships with their parents:
Quentin struggles expressing his feelings; to his parents with whom he has nothing in common, and to Julia, his childhood friend whom he secretly loves. His character evolves has he learns to be more open and honest with others.
Eliot was raised in a redneck family that didn't accept him for being gay, sophisticated and higly intelligent.
Margo is a trust fund kid who's parents prioritized their career over spending time with their daughter. As a result, she is very cold and detached herself.
Alice hates her parents, two magicians who live a pointess hedonistic life. She looked up to her brother who was selfless and strives to be the same.
Julia is maybe the most brilliant character in the books, but the show doesn't do her justice... oh well.
