'The Orville' >>> 'Discovery'. The Orville is Star Trek done right. I really wish they could have made it as a straight Trek show, though.

The Orville is horrible.
Discovery is better in every measurable way.

I am watching both and I am planning to keep watching both until they are inevitably cancelled.
I really wanted to like "Discovery" but they aren't making it easy for me.
I though I wouldn't like "The Orville" because I really dislike Seth McFarlane but I am pleasantly surprised so far.

Which series do you think will have more episodes by the time of cancellation? I'd like it to be 'The Orville' since it's the superior show, but I'm sure it will be 'Discovery' as that's relying on the internet and not broadcast television.

And it's Fox, who don't exactly have a stellar track record when it comes to good sci fi shows. So I expect it will get cancelled. But rumour has it that Discovery has done horribly too. It's said they wanted 4 million people to subscribe to CBS All Access. It's said that in reality they got less than a tenth of that, and many of those subscribed, watched the second part of the pilot, and then unsubscribed again. So maybe they'll both be cancelled. I sure hope Discovery is.

Preliminary: Discovery, so far (6.5/10). Orville is decent too (6/10), I just think the former is getting better and more nuanced, while the latter is getting slightly weaker. Reserve final judgement until we have the full season arcs.

LOL Orville is at 18% at RT; ST Discovery around 85%. Yet audience approval for Orville is at 92% and Discovery only at 58%. Clearly, Discovery made one huge mistake: following the female empowerment trend it has no hot babes on board, while Orville has several big breasted alien amazonians of all creeds. Star Trek fans are notorious basement dwelling fab-a-lot nerds, they just need their fantasy material a la 7-of-9, T'Pol, Troi etc.

Last night, "The Orville" got it's highest ratings since it moved to Thursday night (1.2 in the key demo). It actually beat "Scandal" in the same time slot. For a Fox show, it is doing pretty good so far.

The Orville has been renewed for season 2 per Deadline.com. That's wonderful news! That more than makes up for Discovery being renewed.

I don't mind Discovery, it like a new flashy toy that you used to get for christmas but Orville is like a cute little puppy and a puppy's for life, not just christmas.

The first episode of The Orville is BY FAR the worst one...which is unfortunate because they settled down into a much better balance of story vs. comedy.
But yes...it is basically Next Generation fan fiction...and I am TOTALLY OK with that, because it's pretty damn good fan fiction.
It's stopped being quite so jokey, while still keeping the comedic side. The comedy comes more organically now, often revolving around minor culture clashes.
I don't blame the critics for panning it, because they focused on the pilot which suffered from all of the problems they said it had. But since then, it has become a far far better show.

I tried Discovery but it's yet another Trek series I can't get into.
I should try Orville, though.
