yep that REALLY bugged the hell out of me. what a fail. i can see the execs talking about the character "give her something that will make her feel bad about her looks" "but also make sure its not at all a big deal we dont Really want her to be even slightly unattractive" It was in the book. ok my bad. however - was it described in the book what it looked like? was it really just a slightly darker shade of skin around her eye? Was she otherwise totally beautiful? if so then thats just silly that she would feel THIS bad about it, especially in 2045 (even now eccentricities like more make up or even having a skin mark like that are more and more accepted) it makes me sad that they would make her character be so self-conscious about it, when it looked like it looked (barely there at all) cdn01.cdn.justjared.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/rpo-stills/ready-player-one-movie-stills-tye-sheridan-olivia-cooke-28.jpgSince you seem to have read the book - how was it? I am guessing it was a good book, did you see themovie already, what did you think? did they do justice to the book? did they change muchM

So what did King Kong do? Was it the 33' Kong or just a generic big gorilla?

So what did King Kong do? Was it the 33' Kong or just a generic big gorilla? To me he looked like the Peter Jackson Kong. Couldn't tell I he had the PJ Kong facial scars though. He wasn't 33 (puppet) 76 (man in suit) or Kong Skull Island (cgi with human style walking gate).

So what did King Kong do? Was it the 33' Kong or just a generic big gorilla? most of those references/homage pieces didnt really do anything or not anything important. it felt forced to me. just to cram as much as possible into it. WHILE SKIPPING SPIELBERGS own movies (apparently his own decision) but how can you realistically expect that would not bother true movie fans of that era? ! I think there was a Gremlin somewhere but that was about it… Aargh. it sucks that much more because apparently the source material did include spielberg stuff.

How good are the pop culture cameos? One of the reviews said most if them were like 5 seconds long.

Watching it tonight on IMAX 3D! So, I saw it yesterday and was very pleasantly surprised. I liked the book a lot and was half expecting to be disappointed, but in spite of the many changes from the source material the end result was very good. Is it true that RUSH plays a significant part in the book but isn't used at all in the movie? I wasn't in any rush to see this anyway and less so if that's the case.

so…. what did you think? I was VERY disappointed. oh boy. Currently I would be giving it 5 out of 10 but I will sleep on it. Most of the pop-culture references seems "abused" instead of "used". Plus it felt emotionally empty/flat. This one will be very hard to write about since it is Spielberg and it has a following already and "everybody loves pop-culture references" etc. but in my eyes this was bad on two out of three fronts: as a movie and as entertainment. it was ok within its genre. Aargh. I really wanted to like it though. I will likely go in a couple of weeks, when it's off the no free tickets list. Hoping to catch it in 3D.
I am not going in with any expectations whatsoever. It doesn't really look overly appealing to me, but because it is Spielberg, I will give it a shot. I really liked The BFG a lot and that one bombed. Spielberg has the knack to present things in ways that may not have seen before, even if they have been done before or similar.
I am bound to see it for the second time, want to know if my opinion of it will improve when I have no expectations. High expectations can be a bitch.

I don't know about significant but yes, Rush was part of the plot in the book and is nowhere to be seen in the movie.

From the trailers it looks like 90% of the references are video game characters.

Just finished watching it... and I thought it was a pretty good movie. Nothing mind-blowing or anything but I found it fun and well-made. Better than any Hunger Games, Divergent, or any other YA novel-turned-movie anyway. Definitely worth the money. That said, it's about 90% different from the book, pretty much an entirely different story. I had to shut off my mind from what I knew of the book for me to enjoy the movie.

Very different from the book but everything came together. There was no way they were going to film the book, that never would have worked for a variety of reasons. I didn't go in expecting the book and I really wasn't sure what they were going to do with the story. I loved the movie, I thought it captured the essence of the story just fine. I'll probably see it a second time in the theater because a big screen with a crowd is the best way to experience this movie.

Yeah, after the movie the people behind me were very much upset that the film deviated from the book.

I believe the book was a bit darker than the film, certain characters were reinterpreted for the movie like Nolan and Halliday, as well as structure and plot points.

I had to shut off my mind from what I knew of the book for me to enjoy the movie. would you mind telling me the biggest deviations from the book pls? Wow... where to start. The challenges were all very different. The way the characters meet each other in real life was very different. Their avatars looked different. The way they hacked into IOI and defeated it was very different. The ending was very different. The pop culture references were very different. The entire storyline was different. Actually you know what, how bout I just list the things that were similar as those are easier and far fewer to list? So yeah, the only things that were the same were: 1. The names and identity of the characters 2. The concept of the Oasis 3. The concept of Haliday's challenge 4. IOI is the bad guy 5. There's a floating dance party and a robot-battle finale There, pretty much everything else is different. Now, note that this did not make the movie bad. It was still a pretty enjoyable movie. But it almost felt like the scriptwriters and director read the book and thought, "Nah, there's no way we can fit that in a movie. Let's just make an entirely different movie instead".
