Considering the visual sophistication in some of the new trailer scenes, it would be tough to pull that off with practical effects.

That TIE Silencer shot looked like something straight out of Episode III

not a retro movie anymore, hope Rian didn't go Full Lucas Complaints of CGI in this day and age, for this type of movie, are just silly. These movies are ALL filled with CGI. The problem isn't CGI, the problem is whether or not its done well. When its done well no one will think twice about it. A full one sci-fi movie like Star Wars CANNOT be done without CGI nowadays.

I'm not a fan of CGI. I thought it was especially distracting in Rogue One. But c'mon. If the ST featured puppets a la Yoda from Empire, people would lose their shit talking about how fake it looked. People still view the OT through rose-colored glasses.

Agreed. That CGI was a real turn off. Looks like a trailer from a video game

Six of one, half dozen of the other. The Rancor claw in ROTJ is laughably fake-looking. Some of Yoda's movements in TESB are odd, like when he attacks R2D2. CGI would have looked better there. On the other hand, Yoda looks better as a puppet when he's not moving.

I'd rather have a Yoda that moves like a living being. CGi achieves that better than a puppet. It just does.

CGi achieves that better than a puppet. It just does. Movement, yes. But a real puppet actually looks like it's physically in the scene. CGI characters just don't look like they're actually there 95% of the time. Also, puppet Yoda was extremely expressive and emotive.

But additionally: puppet Yoda looks like he's walking without legs. When he hits R2D2, there's no fluidity to the movement, no bend in the arm and the whole body tilts sideways to make the movement.

But if you want Yoda to do things like what he did in AOTC or ROTS there's no way around it. Its the difference between Yoda in TPM and AOTC. I think we've moved beyond puppetry as being truly effective unless in brief scenes.
The right amount, the right blend, of cgi and practical is best when doing this sort of big budget all out sci-fi action movie. There's just no better way as of right now. Maybe one day they will reach truly photo-real CGI.
