He said that the power in her scares him because he knows the dark side could potentially control it as well. So what if the only way he feels he can stop that from happening is to try and kill her? I think that would create some good character moments between Rey and Luke

I think that would create some good character moments between Rey and Luke In the first trailer Luke says "It's time for the Jedi to end." If you add that to your point it's probably not as far fetched as it sounds.

Nah, it'll be like Yoda in ESB. He fears the power/danger/inexperience of his new potential student, but then trains him/her anyway.
