British accents annoy me. The fact she even screams with a British accent, something I've never seen any other Brit do before, is even more irritating. For your disgruntlement... You can't "see" him do it though.

Her voice is sexy AF. I'm not sure I trust a dude who doesn't appreciate a female with a British accent. British accents annoy me. The fact she even screams with a British accent, something I've never seen any other Brit do before, is even more irritating. Yup... a bit irritating at times... "The jacket. This droid said you stole it." "What are you doing back there? Are you ever going to fire back?" "It's not that one. No. No. The one I'm pointing to. No. No! No! If we don't patch it up, the propulsion tank will overflow and flood the ship with poisonous gas!" "This is the Millennium Falcon? You're Han Solo?"

I agree, she sounds very, very British. When most Britons sing they "sound American". I bet she still sounds like "pip, pip, cheery oh" when she sings.
Can DR sing?

It completely clashed with her below-poverty-line country yokel background.

THAT was the problem, a lonly starving female scavenger on a desert, but with an posh Brit accent and unblemished looks and white jaws like a shark. They really jumped the Sue with this already! Even a beauty like Gal Godot with her accent and looks would be more believeable than THAT.

But what if....just what if...she's related to an Imperial/First Order character? Much has been made in the newer canon books about the haughty British accent that most Imperials had and how most of the Basic-speaking humanoids in the rest of the galaxy didn't speak that way. It's been referenced in almost all of the books I've read recently. Anakin wasn't played with a British accent. Luke wasn't played with a British accent. It could simply be happenstance and it probably is, but why would you switch the m.o. for the lead character at this point unless there was a cause? Because I agree with the earlier post that "they could have gotten anyone" to play the role and I 100% agree with the idea that her accent clashes with her known background. Not only that, but DR is a professional actress. I would assume she can pull off an American accent if she needed to. So maybe her accent is a clue to her origin. Or then again, perhaps it's just that she spent some of her formative years with Unkar and so she picked up his speech pattern. What we really should be asking is: why does Unkar speak in a British accent?!? Dun Dunh Dunnhhh....
