Im just gonna rank them in interviews and interaction with their guest stars
1 Jimmy Kimmel- love him with all his guests and loved his skit with George Clooney snd Hugh Laurie so getscextra points for that.
2 Craig Ferguson- just because of how natural he is with Hugh Laurie every time he was on his show, itsa real treat seeing Hugh Laurie's interviews with him on YouTube. i checked a few days ago its incredible but he went to Craig's show every year House was on the Air from 2004-2011 and visted Craig also for his two music albums so just for how good were his interviews with Hugh i give him the second place.
3 Jimmy Fallon- i love the games he plays with his guest stars the best are Charades and Pictionary
4 Jay Leno
5 David Letterman

believe it or not i thought arsenio hall was a good interviewer I thought the Arsenio show was pretty good, and I think I read that Carson was a little worried about it, early on. It couldn't sustain its early excitement, and didn't last, but I think Carson made some changes to meet the challenge. SNL had a funny skit about it called "Carsenio", with Dana Carvey dressed as a blend of Carson and Arsenio. It might still be on YouTube.

Monologue: 1. Johnny Carson 2. Jay Leno 3. Seth Meyers Interview: 1. Tie--Johnny Carson / David Letterman 2. Craig Ferguson 3. Jimmy Kimmel Comedy Bits / Skits 1. Tie: Johnny Carson / David Letterman 2. Jimmy Fallon 3. Conan O'Brien David Letterman rated first with me in all three categories, with Johnny Carson as a close second. It would be a close match between the two for me, too, and I can see you favoring Dave over Johnny. I placed them even in the interview because both of them could have an actual, enlightening conversation with a wide array of guests, without having the proclivity of so many other hosts to be looking for an opening for a punchline, though both were very good at the perfect ad lib. They directed the attention toward the guest. I have to admit to a somewhat sadistic enjoyment of watching Dave get that shark grin when he was getting ready to maul some narcissistic nitwit like Paris Hilton, though. I would call Carson the master of the monologue, in that he always came out with solid material and delivered it with incredible poise, but also had the ability to turn a dud joke into possibly the most memorable part of the segment with some "saving" comment, often improvised. I preferred watching Letterman's monologues to Leno's, but listed Jay as strong in that part of his show, the implacable stand-up comic. Letterman would sometimes do very odd things, like repeating the same joke for days, and sometimes weeks, in a row, in an almost Andy Kaufman approach to see how much he could get under the skin of the audience. Dave was undeniably fearless when it came to roasting public figures, even his own network bosses and the GE owners of the network. Letterman seemed to like the interview part of his show the best, and tapered off from the skits which had really helped put him on the map early on. Many late-comers to his show don't know how outrageous he could be as a younger man. But Carson never quit his sketch bits, and it's hard to imagine anyone suppressing a laugh at an Art Fern skit.

Kimmel Letterman Ferguson Handler Chelsea Handler shouldn't be overlooked. An edgy alternative, and a much-needed female voice on late night. I liked her monologues and interviews. I didn't think her sidekicks and skits lived up to her standard of intelligence.

Her interviews are really funny relaxed her guests feel less presure to be smart because its a more informal show than the pther three.

I think Chelsea hit the level of fame she wanted, and then left her talk show when she had enough of it. She seems to be much more into the Producer role. She knows where the real power and money are.

Ferguson, O'Brien, Letterman, Fallon. Although I do like Corden's format best of having all the guests out at once. I didn't think I would, but I do.

Johnny and Dave are the high-water mark to beat in this contest. The rest? They don't come close.

Much as I think Conan has some funny slapstick, he is awful about stepping on guests to work in his own jokes. Makes him come off a bit egotistical.

Much as I think Conan has some funny slapstick, he is awful about stepping on guests to work in his own jokes. Makes him come off a bit egotistical. Check out "Conan O'Brien Can't Stop." Wow. CO is very high-strung, and pretty acidic with his staff and friends. I give him credit for being so willing to allow that warts-and-all documentary, but he really doesn't come off as a fun guy, at all. Very needy, very self-centered and harsh. That's been true of Carson and others, as well, but didn't seep through when he was on the air.
