What are some cathartic songs? I don't really know how to describe the criteria other than I don't mean lyrical content, but in terms of the music itself.
Here's the first one that comes to mind for me.

^That doesn't really sound cathartic to me. Generally, early Eyeless in Gaza tracks sound more cathartic to me, because of the uncontrolled/uncontrollable nature of Martyn Bates' vocals back then, really cuts loose like no-one else. Bauhaus' strange little piano number, "Crowds" always sounds properly like an emotional release, too:

The chorus and especially the backing vocals do it for me.
I'm hearing conflict, pain, and anguish in the songs you linked. I'm not really picking up on the catharsis.

Here's my nominee. Pure music that just builds and builds... and then the final release.

Several songs from Arcade Fire's breakthrough album from 10 years ago are my next picks.

Brad Roberts' vocals for Crash Test Dummies reminds me of Fred Neils' " The Dolphins" which is a song of regretful musings. "Untitled 8" by Sigur Ros cathartically ends a song and an album. "July" by Youth Lagoon is cathartic both musically and lyrically.
