Hated on so much? Good cheesey popcorn action fun - perfect for this time of year. You're not getting 'The Shining' or 'The Exorcist' here - but if you take it for what it is - a 'fun ride' - it's actually a decent watch. 7/10 beers for me. *** EDIT - This post is strictly for Van Helsing fans - all others - get steppin'

Its a CGI overload. I like Stephen Sommers movies-but it was one trip to the CGI well too many. The wolf man Dracula fight is a great idea but thanks to cgi overkill feels like a cartoon.
Similar situation with the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen--the story demands a slowed old fashioned approach with slower editing cuts etc. Doing these kinds of things in MTV style hurts the atmosphere a lot.

My only guess is that there are a lot of miserable people who like to rain on other people's parades. That being said I saw it twice in theaters and enjoyed it both times.

Same here - I thought it was a fun flick with a lot of action and has a high rewatch value - you shouldn't be expecting 'The Shining' or 'Jaws' here or any other type of cinema masterpiece - it's a popcorn flick where you just have a good time like Michael Bay films (which typically get bashed and hated on)

I don't think I'm a miserable person, and I don't think I rain on anyone's parade, but I also don't like the film. It mostly comes down to tone. I love the concept of having a movie about Van Helsing, but I didn't like this direction the story and plot takes. I'd prefer a more serious effort. It's like a comic book movie, and I don't usually find those interesting either.
If anyone likes it, though, that's fine with me. I have my share of films others view as crap. I think we all do.
I will say this for Van Helsing, though. I appreciate the film for being the catalyst to get Universal release their classic monsters in those Legacy collections.

I love it. I don't mind that it's like a "cartoon" or a comic book movie. I like those.

Good question. I think Stephen Sommers was just one of those directors that got thrown together with Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich so his movies were just hated on. They were always fun for me though.

The “you can’t say this movie is bad because you couldn’t make a better one” argument? ——————————————————- For some reason I thought I didn’t like this movie, but I gave it a 7, so I guess I did like it.

I always find it amusing when people say that one must be a filmmaker to have a negative opinion of a film but accept that anyone, filmmaker or not, can have a positive opinion of a film. Let me reiterate: I have no problem with anyone liking this film. As I said, the film for me comes down to tone. If you like the tone, you'll like the film. If you don't, you won't. The film itself is reasonably well crafted. It's just not my cup of tea. What's wrong with me having that opinion? Why must you insult me for not liking the movie? And why is it not okay for anyone to bash Michael Bay but okay for you to criticize me?

because the pacing is incredulously slow, none of the characters sans the wolfman are very interesting, and it feels less perturbing due to CGI overload.

Best Wishes Topgun!

I always find it amusing when people say that one must be a filmmaker to have a negative opinion of a film Yeah literally the most retarded argument to defend a movie ever. ”Hey man you think this movie sucks? Well, why don’t you make a better movie then? You (who has no experience whatsoever in making movies) can’t make a better movie, therefore you’re not allowed to say this movie sucks! YOU SUCK!1!ONE!” ”Hey do you know how I know this movie is good? Because people who never went to film school couldn’t make a better movie!1!ONE!”
