Marlon Brando's powerful final scene in The Ugly American (1963; adapted screenplay Stewart Stern, director George Englund)--as the American ambassador to a Southeast Asian nation facing Communist overthrow, responding to a reporter's question: At this point, the shot dissolves from the ambassador speaking to a crowd of reporters in Southeast Asia to a suburban American home, where the ambassador's speech is showing on the television. A man standing in the living room is taking a bite out of a pork chop as he glances at the tv. Then he starts looking at his TV Guide to see what else is on tv. The man clicks off the tv.
