Surprised how many have said seasons 8 or 9. 9 was the end of the show’s prime, but it was still very watchable until about seasons 13-15.

The Principal and the Pauper.
The new writers changed the dynamics of the show.
Also, they lost sight of what and who Homer was. The central character of the show.
In seasons 1-8, Homer is a lovable dim wit. He has morals, principles, and tries to be a good father and husband. He wasn’t very smart. But he wasn’t mentally challenged.
In later seasons, Homer doesn’t care about anyone but himself, he’s self centered and his IQ drops to almost 0. He used to be endearing, for example, Homer and Bart in the box car episode. He recognizes he isn’t a good father. He starts to make an effort. He gets off the couch, helps Bart make his cart. He isn’t very good at making a cart, but he’s supportive. The humor comes from the slap stick humor.

I'll go with "The Principal and the Pauper as well, but it seems at least a couple of times every season they bring out an episode that's truly worthy of them.

Some time in the 90s I guess. I don’t remember it being an ‘Aha!’ moment…I just know I stopped caring about watching it. It was before Family Guy got popular tho so sometime in the late 90s is my best guess.

I stopped watching early on int the early 90s
Not because I didn't like it
But because pre-dvr, other shows were on at the same time.
So I'd say a few seasons in. I did however end up buying the dvd when they started coming out in the early 2000s

Bart-Mangled Banner has all the feel of a "last episode ever" to me, so I'll say that one.

Oy vey, another one of those 'The Simpsons is now officially on life support' posts. The show hasn't changed radically, you've just gotten older. It's always had its ups and downs, is sometimes hilarious and sometimes a dud--and it's been that way from the beginning; and will likely remain that way until its demise sometime in the 33rd century.
