Anybody here see that episode of Frasier, where Niles is having a Halloween party where everybody comes as their favorite literary character? You ever think about if somebody actually had that, what you'd go as?
Admittedly there aren't a lot of things that come to mind for me, and even fewer you could do a costume for. More likely I'd bypass 'favorite' and just go with something that's recognizable, I've done Alice in Wonderland before.
What would you likely come up with?

Sherlock Holmes
I used to own - and frequently wore - a deerstalker cap. I really loved it and often think about getting another so I could become "the best and the wisest man whom I have ever known." (Quote from "The Final Problem").

I was Paddington last year.

One that I think would be an interesting challenge, Polychrome the Rainbow's daughter, from the latter Wizard of Oz series by L. Frank Baum. Everybody always focuses on Dorothy and forgets about Ozma, Polychrome, Scraps the Patchwork Doll, etc.

At our school we have do story book character day to encourage the pagan haters to attend the mandatory school day.

novastar6 Amusingly enough, I was watching that episode the other night. Literary characters--umm... Holmes comes to mind, yes, as mikef6 pointed out, but I'll say--D'Artagnan? I love The Three Musketeers.

I don't know....any literary character who is a 18th century British soldier?
Does manga count? If so, then I'd dress as the fused Supreme Kai in Dragon Ball Z.

Napoloean (he was a major character in "War And Peace," you know). And a very easy costume to pull off. The hats are sold at any costume/Halloween store. White jeans tucked into black boots...military style shirt...buy some phony medals and a sword from a costume store...make yourself a silk sash...borrow a cape from girlfriend or wife...VOILA! Napolean. I took a third place prize when I went as him at a small party.
