And I mean in scale and scope.
There wasn't a moment in all of Harry Potter as well executed in terms of emotion as Jacob losing his memories in the rain. If that is what this series will bring, along with some pending epic showdown between Grindelwald and Dumbledore, then I think this series will be vastly superior in the end.

Actually, I loved Fantastic Beasts. I adored the HP books but was never a fan of the movies. They all had great moments but I feel they failed to capture the magic of the books and I'm just not a big fan of the three main actors. Going into Fantastic Beasts, I had low expectations but it turned out to be a superb movie and I'm very excited to see what comes next. Johnny Depp is miscast imo but I'm sure he will be able to pull it off. I just hope he plays it straight as this character should not be cartoony.

I really loved Beasts, and mostly because you don't need to know a thing about the Harry Potter films to get it. It uses the same rules which it has to, but they really focus on the beasts more than the magic, and is completely it's own thing. I had a great time with it.

I'm not sure you could give me more than one example though.

Would you recommend Beasts to a person who got burned out on HP both books and movies about 3/4ths of the way through the series? Is it about Americans this time or still more anglophile stuff?

Yea as much as I like the older HP movies, the direction is superior in Fantastic Beasts for the most part. I don't know what it is but maybe it's just the little moments like that they allow for.

Yes, and it's because it is so removed. It has the rules of magic of Harry Potter, but you do not need to know a thing about those movies. It feels completely new.
That being said, I believe there is a plan to have a Dumbledore Grindelwald showdown, but again, I don't think you'll need to know anything about Harry Potter to have fun with it.

I enjoyed the movie. Depp, for me, was the only part of the movie that took me out of it. I was thinking, "Great...another movie where Depp acts whacky for the camera..." I'm over his shtick. I would have preferred Colin Farrell to stay in the series instead.

I would have preferred Colin Farrell to stay in the series instead. I agree, I thought Colin Firth was really good, a really seductive villain. But guess we should give Depp the benefit of the doubt til we see him in action.

Harry Potter had the disadvantage of being carried by three kids who had little-to-none acting experience and weren't exactly talented amateurs (in my opinion - they got much better as they aged). The adults were mostly fantastic. And yeah, the direction in Fantastic Beasts is superior.
Fantastic Beasts may end up being the better series in terms of quality, but Harry Potter will probably reign supreme in terms of legacy (not quite the word I was looking for, but eh).

The adults were mostly fantastic. Yeah they worked very hard to attract strong talents to compensate it such as Gary Oldman, Ralph Fieness, Kenneth Branagh, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Brendan Gleeson, Emma Thompson...

That's the single most powerful storyline in the entire series, for me anyway. So simple, yet so friggin effective.
