The show was one of many "Single friends trying to find love and succeed at work" sitcoms. I get that episodes centering on the characters married and with children would be too different. However, do the makers really care about that? I ask because I don't think the show ever dedicated an entire episode to mock politics.
The finale wasn't perfect, but retconning it as a dream was a slap in the face. They didn't even explain what happened to VINCE & LEO! Why not take notes from the later seasons of FRIENDS? They balanced the "family life" scenes with the "friendship" scenes. I must say, that and many other sitcoms knew that the format doesn't really work with middle-aged characters.
