Detective Hoffman is by far my favorite thing about the series. I'm not much on torture and gore, so it took a while for me to finish this series out, but I'm glad I did because the character of Hoffman is great. Especially in 6 and 7 when he's manipulating the police around him into doing what he wants. Also he was honest with himself as opposed to Kramer, in his love for the brutality of what they did.

He's a very divisive character amongst fans of the movies. I think he's alright, not the best character of the series but not the worst. The thing is that they get to focus on his character out of context and felt out of place for him to be a central character, mainly due to his limited amount of screentime in the 3rd and even 4th installments. As for his brute nature in contrast to John's wisdom and sincerity, I get where they were going with it, but then again we already got that with Amanda, who is arguably a better and more fleshed out character, since it built up, whereas Hoffman was just kind of an out of nowhere surprise (until we see his origins in Saw V). But still, I don't hate Det. Hoffman as I do think he is quite the badass and a good successor as the main villain next to Jigsaw.

Very few films disturb me. August Underground 1-3, A Serbian Film and Seed really did. Im guessing you will hate those.

I'm disappointed that the new Jigsaw movie dosen't have Hoffman or Dr. Gordon in it. I was looking forward to seeing if he made it out of that bathroom at the end of 3D.

Not in an enjoyable way. I didnt enjoy them at all. The Human Centipede II is a film that I thought was gross as hell but I enjoyed it. August Underground was plotless and pointless.

I just found Hoffman bland. I don't think Costas Whatshisf**k had more than one facial expression across five movies. But I will agree, at least he was acknowledged as a true villain. The series lost me when it started trying to make John Kramer sympathetic and morally righteous. To the point that fans actually balked when he burned The Boondock Saint's wife to death in 7, because she was "innocent". Um, remember Dr. Gordon's wife and child who were going to be shot if Gordon failed? They were pretty innocent. Kramer was evil, and always had been.

I just watched them all (they all popped on Netflix) as a precursor to seeing the new one (haven't yet).
--following stuff might have spoilers--
I think the second was my favorite overall, but regarding characters, Hoffman is my favorite. He's an interesting contrast to Jigsaw in that he's way more physically imposing and brutal, but not always that smart.
I liked watching them in a run. They make so much effort to justify the smallest details to keep the continuity going. By even the second movie, it is pretty much required to suspend your disbelief (how is the house that big? how can a terminally ill man afford/manage to build all this stuff?). Going forward it gets even more hard to believe, but the creative forces in these films seem to have a really serious dedication to the continuity.
Tobin Bell is awesome every time he's involved...even if it's just as a voice.
My two beefs are the strobe edits (usually when someone is trapped...and screaming their lungs out) and Cary Elwes. Danny Glover does it a little bit, but I don't know what Elwes was thinking. He's hamming it up like there's no tomorrow. I usually dig his performances, but in the original (and even more in the 3D 7th installment), he's barely a believable person to me. The slow clap entrance in the 7th movie is really bizarre.
I wish Glover had been able to stick around for a few of the sequels in some capacity. His character was intriguing. He'd have been interesting to have around in the sequel. Looks like he was mortally wounded in the first movie, but he's also established to have survived his throat slash. His character reminded me a lot of the cop he played in "Predator 2," which he was great in as well.
Not a huge gore hound (love practical effects and horror though), but I'm a big fan of this series. It swings for the fences and I can appreciate that. Hoping "Jigsaw" measures up.
