it was good, albeit somewhat over the top at places and it had pacing and character writing issues. I gave it 7/10 then after seeing 1922 and Lady McBeth (both 7.5/10).

Just saw this yesterday. Still thinking about it. Absolutely crazy movie and seriously messed up. I think it may be the best film I've seen of the year (2017) so far. Not that there has been much competition. Very weak year for movies.

Loved this film (made a thread about it a few days ago and nobody replied to it lol) . I didn't know too much about the plot (other than its from the guy that made Bone Tomahawk which I also loved). VERY very impressed with Vaughn in this one. He really showed off his acting chops and was literally cracking peoples' heads open like they were watermelons lol.
Highly recommend seeing this if you don't mind ultra/brutal violence. 9/10

Towards the end of the film, Udo Kier and another "character" sum up my feelings on the film so perfectly that it seemed intentional: "What a mess." "Very disappointing."
I hated almost every aspect of this movie. It was visually ugly. It was plodding. It was stupid. It had an inconsistent tone and seemed to think that a movie where a prisoner is put into cell filled with shards of glass (that seems like a security risk) and punctuated with a decapitation by curb stomping, with the head rolling into a literal shithole, was best played out as a slow character drama. It felt like it was trying to be The Shawshank Redemption and the Story of Ricky at the same time. It was an absolute mess.
Vaughn was great in it (and that's the only positive I can give the film) but I ended up rolling my eyes at his character by the end (which is unfortunate because he was seriously the only real character) because they made him practically invincible and infallible until the end. The guards even directly comment on how tall he is and how big his dick is and he was treated with such reverence by the film itself that I thought the cross on the back of his head was symbolic of him being Jesus Christ. Oh wait, it probably was.
It could have been a fun, cheesy movie. It wasn't. It was slow and boring. It could have been a gripping drama. It wasn't that either because it was too ridiculous to take seriously.

Skip it.
