Great choice of song stefancrosscoe . I am a big fan of Todd Rundgren and own all his solo albums and his albums with Utopia and I'm surprised he didn't become a lot bigger 'cause he has wrote and recorded some great songs including some other Artists covered and had hits with like 'I Saw the Light', 'Hello It's Me', 'A Dream Goes On Forever', 'Can We Still Be Friends', 'Time Heals', 'Fade Away', 'It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference', 'Change Myself', 'Compassion' and 'You Make Me Crazy' Thanks, and nice to see that you are back. I did pick up a few of Todd's 70s and 80s albums, some years ago. But have only just recently, re-visited Healing. But I am planning on continue on, with Hermit of Mink Hollow, A Wizard, A True Star and Something/Anything?. and I don't know if you have heard of Kasim Sulton but he was Todd's backup singer and a member of his band, Utopia and a few years ago he released this song you might like. That was a very Todd Rundgrenish song, and one I felt I had heard before, as it sure has that familiar feel to it, catchy, sweet and very playful music. I guess I should try to give Utopia a chance, later on, as I never got there, yet. Anyway, thanks for the recommendation of Clocks All Stopped, as beside Rundgren, I also got a bit of the early 70s Hall and Oates feel to that song, which is never a bad thing. By the way, speaking of Todd Rundgren and Tiny Demons, I love this live performance of the song: Such a powerful version. You're welcome and sorry for taking a few days to get back to you on this but I have the flu and haven't been feeling well. Todd Rundgren released a lot of his best albums in the 70s and 80s and I would suggest getting the three you listed especially 'Something/ Anything' which a lot of fans think is his best album and I really like the 'Hermit of Mink Hollow' and the final song 'Fade Away' is one of my favs. I am pretty sure you can get quite a few of his albums in box sets now along with Utopia and I remember seeing his name among the Artists and Bands in the 'Original Album Classics' series which has five albums by an Artist or Band for a cheap price and we have got a few of those over the years but I haven't liked some of his recent albums 'cause he has gone more in a Techno direction which I am not a fan of and the last proper Rock album he recorded was 'Arena' back in 2008. I am glad you liked the Kasim Sultan song and it does have a very Todd Rundgren vibe to it and I think you will like Utopia and Kasim actually sang some of their songs like 'Set Me Free' below and I think the biggest difference between Todd's solo songs and Utopia songs were they were less serious and more experimental and the music video for 'Feet Don't Fail Me Now' is hilarious. Thank you for sharing that video and that is a good performance and one of the problem with live videos on You Tube is some of them have really awful quality and you can barely hear them but it is good when you come across live videos like that.

What do you think of these songs stefancrosscoe and are you a fan of the band, America? We have seen them in concert three times and they are really good and I love their 'Human Nature' album and it was dedicated to Carl Wilson after he passed away which is why it had a Beach Boys feel to it.

When it comes to ones own health and having a time-off, that is never something you should say sorry for. But hopefully your are getting better now? Just a few days ago, I woke up with some stomach cramps similar symptoms, or what felt like it. Thankfully, for the last 3 days, they seems to be all gone. Yeah, Fade Away, is one of those I remember well, from Hermit of Mink Hollow, even though I have not visited that record, for a while. As with many of Rundgren's albums, they often comes along with a very impressive selection, of all kind of music genres, and which for some, might be a bit of a "frustrating" one, as the records could be kind of tricky, to place, but I always think of his music, at least of the 70s and 80s, as classic rock, and then some... Beside the 70s and 80s albums, I have yet to hear much else of what Todd made, much later on. I guess I will focus mostly on his older and classic stuff, at least first, then maybe later on, go onwards, and hear out, a bit here and there, if his newer releases might catch on. Yeah, we are getting kind of spoilt rotten, with all these free and HD/HQ quality in sound/picture music videos/live performances, and even whole music concerts as well. But there is also very many clips/videos that sadly, is still in terrible condition, even as of right now. That can be quite annoying, when it comes to ones favorites artists or songs. Speaking of Todd Rundgren, not just as an artist or band member, but he sure were one hell of a producer. Specially looking at some of the all time great and classic albums he were involved with, during the 70s and 80s. Where as for me, his finest hour, came with the absolute psychedelic pop masterpiece Skylarking (1986), by the british new wave group XTC. From what I understand, there seemed to have been quite a shaky and intense relationship, taking place between Rundgren and bandleader Andy Partridge (of XTC). But one that I guess came naturally, out of having these two very demanding and creative figures, being locked into a small studio (think it was Rundgren's, located not far outside Woodstock) for a long time, but yeah, out of all the hostility, arrived, surely one of the most beautiful sounding records of the 80s. Summer's Cauldron/Grass (1986)Season Cycle (1986)Mermaid Smiled (1986)Dear God/Dying (1986)Not sure if you are a fan of XTC, but the album Skylarking is surely one to give a few gos, especially for fans of Rundgren.

The vocals, sure do remind me of Tom Petty. Out of the three songs, I would say that the one I enjoyed the most, were the last one, Wednesday Morning. Anyway, thanks for bringing them up to me.

That is a very nice tribute to the 80s, at least the video/clips that is. Might not be the biggest fan of Lene Nystrøm and her helium/smurf vocals, but I did actually hear again, their entire debut album, Aquarium (1997), just a few weeks ago. And I gotta say, if I only had to own and listen to one euro-dance album of the late 90s. Well, then Aquarium is really not all that terrible. Quite the opposite. Lots of bubbly, feel-good melodic, dance songs. Catchy and cute, as hell, yet there were also a few rather mature pop-songs in there as well, and no wonder they sold like 10-15 million copies of that one, as pretty much every track, felt like a potential radio hit/single. By the time they hit their second release, 1999-2000 with Aquarius, I guess the world had moved on, and were probably tired of the glory days of the bubble-gum/euro-dance era, which seemed to hit its peak, around 1996-98, where specially the danish music scene, just could not get enough, as beside Aqua, who surely were the biggest acts, within not only that genre, but also among the scandinavian music scene, you had other colorful artists like Daze (Super Hero Love and Tamagotchi), Hit N' Hide (Space invaders), Toy-Box (Tarzan and Jane and Best Friend), and others, like Cartoon Heroes and just a whole bunch of similar sounding/looking groups, but that rarely had the talent to back up their one hit, the same way as Aqua did. Anyway, of the songs from Aquarium, that I enjoyed the most, I guess it is hard to leave out how much sweet nostalgia they come with, as for me, some of them just oozes so much of the spring/summer of 1997, and yeah, I guess that is a pretty big reason to why I do not hate/loathe the record:
Speaking of retro/tribute video compilations of the 80s, with that sweet feel-good vibe going very strong. I stumbled upon this one, last night:

Laura Brannigan - Self Control I loved listening to the Vice City soundtrack (bought the entire CD box-set, before I even got around to play the video game) with my headphones, when lying in bed at night, during the summer of 2003. While I already had fallen in love with the 80s, a few years earlier, it sure did not "hurt", to be soaked up into the whole 80s atmosphere of that videogame and the awesome (surely the best videogame soundtrack, ever made) music it so very much had included. So many great songs, artists and bands, several I had never heard of, until Vice City arrived, and found some of my alltime favorite acts, like Talk Talk and Judas Priest, and the list just goes on and on. Anyway, Laura Brannigan and Self Control, really sums up those hot summer nights, when I would be listening to the music, dreaming of this cool world of 80s neon lights, and how I envisioned it must be, to live during that decade. Another huge favorite of that soundtrack, and I believe the same radio station (Flash 105), came through the british pop-rock group, The Outfield and their:

Yeah. You’re right. Thank you for saying that and I just don’t want to come across as rude for not getting back to you earlier and I am still feeling sick today but I am getting better and hopefully I will be back to normal by next week and the good thing is at least this flu is not as bad as some of the other ones I have had in and I’m still going to work and we had one of my Nieces (Courtney) spend the weekend with us and we love having her over and didn’t want to let her down. I am sorry to hear you recently had some stomach cramp-like symptoms but I am glad they are gone and have you had those before or was that the first time ‘cause if they return you might consider seeing a Doctor. ‘Fade Away’ was a great song and I just love everything about it and am surprised it wasn’t a hit but for some reason he just never become really popular with a mainstream audience like other Artists and Bands that were around at the same time did apart from a few songs that got radio airplay and it was kinda the same story with Uriah Heep, Nazareth and Blue Oyster Cult who have heaps of albums out and influenced a lot of other Artists and Bands but never really had much mainstream success outside of a few songs.
Todd Rundgren did venture off into other genres on his albums and that might explain why he didn’t become a bigger star in the 70s and 80s but I think most fans see him as a Classic Rock Artist too that liked to experiment with different genres every now and then. I am not sure how a lot of people that know him for ‘I Saw the Light’, ‘Can’t We Still Be Friends’ and ‘Hello It’s Me’ would react to his recent albums ‘cause as I said they are pretty different compared to those songs and I think he might prefer to experiment more on albums now than write songs that could turn into hits ‘cause he has reached the point of his career where it is very unlikely he is going to have another big hit on the charts. It is best to focus on his earlier albums as a solo Artist and member of Utopia but two songs he recorded in the 90s I think were good were 'Change Myself' and 'Kindness.' It is good we have so many live videos on You Tube to watch and we have got to see some Artists and Bands perform live on the site that we would have never got to see 'cause they never toured Australia or have passed away and I am disappointed I never got to see Dennis Wilson in concert with the Beach Boys before he died (I did get to see Carl) but thanks to You Tube I have got to see him performing more of his Beach Boys songs live. Sadly the poor audio quality really ruins some live songs on You Tube though and I have trouble sitting through them when they are like that.
Todd Rundgren was a good producer too and and I think the album he is best known for producing was Meatloaf's 'Bat Out of Hell' but he also produced albums by Hall & Oates, Cheap Trick, Badfinger, Grand Funk Railroad, Patti Smith Group, The Psychedelic Furs, Jill Sobule, New York Dolls and The Pursuit of Happiness among others and have you heard his cover version of the Beach Boys' 'Good Vibrations' 'cause he sounds so similar to the Beach Boys singing that song a lot of people I know that I played it to thought it was the Beach Boys. Did you know he started out in another band first called Nazz and he was the lead singer of a short lived revived version of the Cars called the New Cars with original members, Elliot Easton and Greg Hawkes and Kasim Sultan. They only released one album which was mostly full of live covers of the Cars' classic songs but they recorded three new songs which I thought were pretty good. Thank you for all the XTC videos. I have heard of the band and like some of the songs I have heard but we don't have any of those albums so I will check out their 'Skylarking' album. I was curious if you have any favourite Aussie Artists and Bands or songs 'cause I know a lot I could introduce you too and these are three from the 90s I really like.

They had a number of hits out back in the 70s and 80s that are still played on Classic Rock radio stations here in Australia like ‘Sister Golden Hair’, ‘A Horse With No Name’, ‘I Need You’, ‘Ventura Highway’ and ‘Only in Your Heart’ and you might have heard of the songs but just not knew the name of the band and here are two songs below you might recognise. I am glad you enjoyed the songs though and they do have a feel good vibe to them and I am a fan of a lot of bands that perform that style of Rock and do you like The Eagles, Bread, The Doobie Brothers and Seals & Crofts?

Yeah, the stomach symptoms, might be just something that happens, every now and then. No pain or nasty things, beside the cramp-similar stuff, but of course, if it is not something that goes away, or comes back, again and again, I will surely bring it up to my Doctor. I have surely now learned the hard way, that when using Dr. Google, that is never the answer. In fact, anything but that. Speaking of Todd Rundgren. Last day, I decided to bring out my CD copy of Hermit of Mink Hollow, and there were a few songs, which I had almost forgotten about, from earlier visits. I guess when I picked it up, I went in, only knowing Can We Still Be Friends (due to me, being a huge fan of the comedy of Jim Carrey, Dumb and Dumber) but was impressed at how much different, most of the album actually turned out to be. And I sure can understand, that those, expecting an entire record, filled with similar songs, might have been a little "put off", at least by some of the more "weird" or "rougher" edged cuts, but for me, I really enjoyed that. It kept you on your toes, as a listener, not playing too "safe", and I guess that is why Todd Rundgren never quite made it, at least as a big/huge pop-rock star. Of the cuts from Hermit of Mink Hollow, that I enjoyed the most, of hearing again. Determination (sounded like something which could easily have come out, during the mid/late 80s), Out of Control (love it, when Todd cranks it up a bit extra), Bag Lady, You Cried Wolf, Too Far Gone, and then of course the quirky, yet incredibly catch (i cannot even spell it, so I have to copy and paste it) Onomatopoeia, (which when I first heard it, sounded like I'm about to peea) . Also, speaking of the classic Carrey comedy, Dumb and Dumber. I was so disappointed, when I finally picked up the original or official CD soundtrack, years ago. As it did not feature any of the Rundgren song/instrumental cuts he made for the film, but thankfully, several of those, have been put out on Youtube. I love the feel-good, sweet and also kind of sad, in a way, sounds he made for that film. It would never have been as good, without all that great music, and that is something I have always enjoyed about the movies of the Farrelly brothers, they put out a similar great sounding movie/soundtrack, with Kingpin (1996), and also one which included music by Todd Rundgren. Sadly, the latter film, somehow, never quite seemed to enjoy the same success, as Dumb and Dumber. A bit strange, as it had a very resembling theme/characters, but one that actually also hit a bit "harder", when it come to include more dramatic or serious moments, within all the goofy, slapstick comedy, that takes place. Anyway, the beautiful Rundgren instrumental, I am not sure, ever got an offical release, but several people have made rather fine and impressive cover versions, online, and this might be one of those I think stand out, as the better or best: Anyway, speaking of Rundgren and not becoming a bigger popstar, I like music and artists, who just do not follow the same style/genre, on every release. Sure, some artists and bands, have made a nice living, making the "same" record, through most of their entire careers. But I do often prefer those, who seems to never stand "still", always eager to explore or try out new things, in favor of just doing the same old routine, over and over again. Looking at the list of artist and albums he produced or worked on, that is very impressive. I really enjoyed his production on the Forever Now (1982) record by The Psychedelic Furs, and probably had a huge part, in giving the band a more commercial yet not too "watered down" style, and where the title cut, President Gas and Love My Way are all classic Furs cuts, and among the best sounding of the british new wave era of the early 80s. Nazz, I have only heard a few songs of, usally when VH1-Classic Rock went on, during late nights on tv. Sadly, VH1 Classic is no longer, at least in my country, but MTV80s has taken over, and as a huge fan of that decade, I guess I cannot really complain that much. Rundgren and The Cars? Now that sounds interesting. XTC and Rundgren, at least to my ears, was like a match made in "heaven", even though it sounds like they went through "hell" and back, to get the album made. It really is a beautiful, warm, fun and just, incredible love letter, to the whole psychedelic 60s The Beatles, Beach Boys, The Kinks and so many others, and I guess Rundgren made a huge and lasting impact, on XTC and how they would later on go onto produce or make their albums. Their earlier releases, specially made in the late 70s and early 80s, where much harder or edgier in sound and style. Fast and thundering guitars, drums and bass, more new wave/rock in sound, but fitted so well, with the early days of XTC. Lots of energy and melodies, but sadly Andy Partridge began suffering from some serious stage fright, and they seemed to have quite an impressive reputation building up, as one of the best live acts during that time. So it must have been very tough, to leave all that behind, also never quite making it as a commercial pop-rock group, as they sure had so many potential radio hits, filled with catchy and sweet melodies. But without no touring and little support from their record label, they thankfully would later on, find a way of becoming one of the best and surely most original studio acts, of the 80s, not that far off, what other great and gifted british artists and bands, like Kate Bush, David Sylvian or Talk Talk would go on to, later that decade. And some of their best albums, surely came out of that as well. I guess trying to pick out, just a few of so many of their great songs, is, well, not gonna happen. But, if you are interested, or get to give Skylarking or some of the songs from that record, a go, and like what you hear. I will surely recommend a few of their later albums/songs, which kind of follows the same style/route, with the psychedelic pop sound: Anyway, I will just "throw" out a few, of those I think could have easily fitted well, into the sound and world of Skylarking: Mayor of Simpleton (1989)Then She Appeared (1992)Wrapped in Grey (1992)I Can't Own Her (1999)Knights in Shining Karma (1999)The Last Balloon (1999)

I was curious if you have any favourite Aussie Artists and Bands or songs 'cause I know a lot I could introduce you too and these are three from the 90s I really like. I guess the closest I come, to having a favorite Aussie musician/artist, is probably either Nick Cave or Kylie Minogue (even better, when the two make music together). Sure, I know of INXS, AC/DC and a few others, like Savage Garden, they were huge back in the mid/late 90s, and I really enjoyed their 1997 hit, To the Moon and Back. Yet, I never quite got around to check up any further of their music. Then I really loved the song, Great Southern Land, by Icehouse. Another group, I have often been thinking of, check upon further. But beside that, I guess I am not that "updated". However, I do sure love the Aussie films of the 70s, 80s and early 90s. Specially withing the cult-movie genre, and so many great talents arrived out of that period, yet few of the films the directors, writers or actors made, reached quite the same "edge" or "style", when they moved onto Hollywood, and got bigger money to work from. Their earlier films, just had a certain special to them, which few of the Hollywood produced ones, managed to re-capture. Not saying they turned all "bad", but something was kind of missing. By the way, thanks for your recommendations. I guess the one I prefered, were again the last one from your post, Leonardo’s Bride - Even When I'm Sleeping. Never heard any of them before, but the latter one, reminds me of the days of 1996-97 and early morning MTV videos, just before school started. I guess another Aussie name, that hit off big around that time, were Natalia Imbruglia, with Torn. So many versions of that song, but few enjoyed more success than the 1997 version.

I do sure enjoy a bit of The Eagles, where as the others, I am not too familiar with. By the way, thanks for the America songs, of Sister Golden Hair and Ventura Highway. Nice music, and while I am not sure when or if the music stores (well, the few left in my city) is open again, anytime soon. I will try to look out for some of their CDs, but then again, I guess Youtube is not a "bad" back-up, for listening to music either, at least these days, that is.
