Erik Estrada (born March 16, 1949, New York City, New York, U.S.)

Henry Enrique "Erik" Estrada was born March 16th, 1949, in Spanish Harlem, New York, the son of seamstress Carmen Moreno, and jack-of-all-trades Renildo Estrada. He's an actor, reality celebrity and voice artist known throughout the world for his co-starring role in the televised police drama 'CHiPs', which ran from 1977 to 1983. He's also worked in Spanish-language telenovelas and performed in infomercials. Estrada is a committed Christian of Puerto Rican descent who sometimes makes religious movies.

Erik Estrada

Estrada made his film debut in the role of Nicky Cruz alongside bestselling recording artist Pat Boone. A host of roles followed that established Estrada as a key player within the crime siege milieu. Television stardom halted his character actor career in its tracks but he'd return to the big screen in the 1980s.

"When I was auditioning for CHiPS, I auditioned as an Italian-American cop. When I got the role, originally Poncherello was Poncherelli. When I got the part – this is in the ’70s – I said it’s time for change on television. Here I am an Hispanic-American actor, born and raised in New York City, Puerto Rican background, it’s time that we make my character an Hispanic-American cop. I was one of the first to break the mold."

"[Charlie] Chaplin wrote me after Rocky. Three people wrote me that I never got over. One was the president, the second was Chaplin, and the third was Frank Capra, when I lost for best actor. Talk about Capra-esque! I said, "Damn, I'm just a guy off the streets of New York. Charlie Chaplin!" And they all identified with my character. Capra wrote, "But take heart, angels make note of things like that. Because it's fitting that the character you created, Rocky, would lose, that other people would take all the glory." I never forgot that. Chaplin said, "Rocky reminds me of a little character I used to play. We'd love for you to come to Switzerland and visit." And you know what? I never went. A few months later, he was dead. Same thing with Elvis. He called and said, "I'd like to screen Rocky. We'll rent the theater in Memphis, and we'll watch the film." And I didn't go. I was shy, believe it or not. And I remember, when he died in '77, I was doing F.I.S.T. So now I try to instill in my children: Grab something when it's offered. I'm not a big believer in reincarnation. I haven't met anyone yet: "Look at me, I was a caterpillar!"

Estrada is a trained fighter in mixed martial arts with a dedicated defense regimen. This has led to work with many of crime cinema's greatest low budget practitioners and due to his reputation for reliability he's often been rehired by the same filmmakers. He hosted the outdoor adventure show 'American Adventurer' and appeared in music videos for Bad Religion, Eminem and the Butthole Surfers. Keeping up appearances, Estrada guested on 'Sabrina, The Teenage Witch' as himself which led to a bevy of appearances playing fictionalised variations on Erik Estrada's public persona. In 1997, Estrada married sound technician Nanette Mirkovich and published his top-selling autobiography, 'Erik Estrada : My Road From Harlem To Hollywood', which Quentin Tarantino has expressed interest in. He also has a band named after him, Estradasphere, who are based in Santa Cruz, California.

Estrada joined fellow tv police legend William Shatner for the spoof fiction 'National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1' (1993). He's good friends with New Jersey crime crew member Leo Rossi and Puerto Rican superstar Luis Guzman. He's currently filming 'Gloria Dais' with tv legend Marion Ross and a 'Cool Cat' sequel with karate queen Cynthia Rothrock.

In an interview in the 1980s, actress Linnea Quigley remembered back to when boys at school were kinking their hair to look like Erik Estrada. All the girls were getting Farrah Fawcett haircuts, including her. Linnea is a Swedish name (she's from Iowa) - it's a wild flower.

I thought of Erik Estrada because he made a couple of movies I enjoy with Karen Black who you posted a tribute too. I like 'Spirits', it's directed by Fred Olen Ray who made two or three films with Black himself.
