This 1980 movie stars James Caan (who also directed) as a divorced father who moves heaven and earth to locate his two small children after his ex-wife marries a low-level gangster who is put in the Federal Witness Protection Program. With the help of a woman reporter, he eventually succeeds in his quest. I've only seen this film once (on TV), but I'll always remember the climactic scene where Caan first sees the kids enjoying ice cream in a diner (in the middle of the night) as his ex drinks coffee while pondering the mistake she made in marrying a crook. The reunion embrace between father and offspring was just so touching, and then the very next scene shows him taking the kids to the airport--and they're still in their night clothes, LOL. There is a statement at the end saying something about how the laws have changed, permitting the non-custonial parent to have full custody if the ex ends up in the Witness Protection Program. The movie doesn't say, but I had the idea that the Caan character marries the reporter, so that the children can have a "mother".
Anyone else see this movie? I'd love to see it again.

Didn't know it even existed. Sounds good though, now I'll have to take a look.
