You're reading an Assassin's Creed novelization, were you expecting historical fidelity and high literature?
In any case, it's a work of fiction. According to Marvel, the X-Men stopped the Cuban missile crisis; according to Homeland, two guys names Saul and Javadi crafted the Iranian nuclear agreement, and John Kerry had nothing to do with it. So why can't a novelization of a video game have its own alternate history?
It's not a mistake by a novelist, it's an attempt to mold history and a fictional world together.
