I'm thinking it's a British film. Four dangerous men kidnap children on a bus, and take them to a remote place. The men wear masks. The most cruel of them is "Father Christmas", the next evil one is "Mickey Mouse", and then there is "Kitty Cat" and "Donald Duck". The teacher gets the kids to act as a savage unit to beat the kidnappers, after the kidnappers help them a bit when Father Christmas kills one of his own men (Duck) for being hesitant to do evil. With just three to contend with, the teacher gains hope and puts a plan into effect. What is the name of this film?

Yes, definitely Fortress (1985). This was one of the most asked about movies on the old IMDb I Need to Know board. The movie is an Australian movie that was made for HBO back in a time when HBO played mostly theatrical movies and had few originals.

The movie is an Australian movie that was made for HBO back in a time when HBO played mostly theatrical movies and had few originals. I remember that but why was/is it so popular? It was one of those movies that sticks in people's memories, but they usually don't remember the title. It's usually the kidnappers wearing the masks that people who ask about remember the most. There was also a part where they had to swim underwater through a cave. That stuck in people's memories, too. HBO use to show this movie a few times a week for years back in the mid to late 80s, so a lot of people probably saw it multiple times back then. I remember watching Fortress and Over the Edge quite a few times back then. Over the Edge was another often asked about movie on the old I Need to Know board. People always remembered the kids that hung out at the rec room chaining their parents inside the high school during a PTA meeting, then setting the school on fire. I own Over the Edge on DVD now, but probably haven't seen Fortress since the 80s.
